Question Regarding Custom Skins in 3.0

Hello,

I've recently downloaded and tested Project M on my Wii using the hackless version (not wifi safe). Everything works great and I'm really enjoying this mod, but I'd like to spice it up a bit with some community-made textures from Brawl Vault.

I have downloaded some files that I would like to have added into the Project M files in addition to the existing files. My problem is, I'm very new to the entire process. I looked up tutorials online, and most of them were made prior to Project M's 3.0 release. Here's where I'm stuck: I've been following their steps private>wii>app>RSBE>st> (place where game files can be changed). The only issue is, the only file I have in the st folder is a .bin file, unlike what I have seen in tutorials. Originally, I ignored this and tried placing the files in their respective folders through ProjectM> pf > fighter > (character).

So far, this has not worked for me. I'm not sure how to go about fixing this issue and I'm hoping someone will be willing to help. I'd appreciate it greatly, as I would love to have additional custom content.

On another note, I have tried to implement a mod that has multiple files other than just a basic (for example) FitToonLink00.pac/pcs.

I wanted to implement the "Skull Kid DO Style Version 1.5" by DivineOverlord and -BigSharkZ-
The download consists of (if you choose one of the two options):
"FitToonLink - Balanced Version XD.pac"
"FitToonLink - OP Version.pac"
"FitToonLink00.pac"
"FitToonLink00.pcs"
"FitToonLinkFinal.pac"
"FitToonLinkMotionEtc.pac"
Some of these files conflict with those in the Project M file for ToonLink, and I'm not sure if I should be replacing them, keeping both, or overwriting them. I'm also not sure if I should be changing the names of the files either, but I don't think "Balanced Version XD" would be read easily. I know that FitToonLinkMotionEtc is supposed to be like an action set, so I don't think I should be replacing that one with the existing one, unless I want all the ToonLinks to act the same.

Anyway, sorry about this large rant. I hope someone will be willing to help me out with this.

Thanks!!

only replace files for characters that look like "FitToonLinkXX.pac" or "FitToonLinkXX.pcs" "XX" being a number. 99% of the time these files will only change the visual appearance of the character.

Do not replace anything else or that character will no longer work right in Project M.

for what you've downloaded, it seems to be the skull kid PSA, which means it's an alternate moveset that goes over toonlink. Of course, to get the full project M experience, it isn't recommended to replace custom movesets over the P:M ones, but if you insists on using the skull kid moveset you'd simply replace all of the files you see in toonlink's folder. You'd also remove the " - Balanced Version XD" from the filename so that it would work correctly.

Had you downloaded a simple texture or model replacement, you'd simply put the file in SD>projectm>pf>fighter>*character folder here*>*in here*

Thanks for the reply! That makes sense, I'd like to be able to have an additional character moveset without breaking Project M if possible.

Thank you for the info! If I were to remove everything from ToonLink's folder and replace everything with Skull Kid's assets, would that in turn make Toon Link have the same moveset as Skull Kid? Or will the new custom moveset only affect that of the alternate costume? I'd like to be able to separate the two, if at all possible. Without replacing a character, that is.

Hey! Private message me if you also want to know how to add character selection portraits and character battle icons. I think I can compile a guide which will hopefully help expand your fun.

On topic:
You must ALWAYS remember capitalization is important. Let's take an example from Toon Link:
**The letter "X" represents a place holder, not actually part of the

FitToonLinkXX.pac ← this is part of your texture hacks. You can replace any of your character's skins according to their pallates. Go here for pallate ID numbers: http://www.ssbwiki.com/Palette_swap_(SSBB)

FitToonLinkXX.pcs ← this is also part of your texture hack, but sometimes simple texture hacks won't include this. Same deal as above. Make sure BOTH this and the .pac file above share the same file number.

FitToonLink.pac ← this is the core of your character's attacks. When you receive a PSA hack or something, you might get it named such as "SkullKid.pac." All you have to do is rename it to FitToonLink.pac or whatever character you're trying to edit.

FitToonLinkFinal.pac ← this changes the final smash

FitToonLinkMotionEtc.pac ← this changes the animations and movement of the character

First, you have to know that PSA and motion hacks affect all character slots of that single character. You can't just install Skull Kid PSA on the standard Toon Link and expect to be able to install a Fierce Diety PSA on his red costume. It doesn't work like that. The only thing you can change about character slots is their textures. You CAN have a Skull Kid texture over the standard Toon Link and you CAN have a Fierce Diety Toon Link over his red costume. That's why the texture files have numbers next to them because they edit the slots.

If you download a hack, you must remove everything else from the character's folder (except the texture hacks, of course) that will be obviously replaced by the files inside the new hack you downloaded in order for it to work properly. If I put Skull Kid texture over Toon Link's standard costume, I would rename it to FitToonLink00.pac. If I download a Fierce Diety Toon Link skin and the creator decided to name it FitToonLink00.pac, I'll simply rename it to FitToonLink01.pac so it won't overwrite the Skull Kid texture.

Thank you so much! That was very helpful! I'll go ahead and give it a try when I can and let you know if I'm still having issues.
