question on textures and stage textures

I understand that the color hacks have to be fitmario00.pcs and that stage textures have to be the same format like STGFINAL.pac. But just two questions

What do I do when the color hack is a RAR file? If I edit the last name of the file to pcs will that make the hack work? I've tried doing this and either nothing happens or it freezes my game.

What do I do when the stage texture is a RAR file? same thing as the color hack I change the file to STG(stage name).pac and same situation as the color hacks.

Also I have the directory right for both things. pf/fighter/mario and pf/stage/melee.
