Question about short hop fair / sh fair oos

Currently my biggest issue is with SH Fair. It's easy for me to SHF but if I want to bring out my fair almost instantly after SH to keep the SHDF option on the table I slide from Y to A. The issue is that 50% or more of the time, I seem to hit the A button too fast like maybe in the first few frames of the jump (before IASA?) and it's like the A button doesn't register.

I thought this might be an issue with my controller's A button sticking but it's the same on 4 different controllers, so I know it's the timing.

If I try to compensate by delaying the A input I tend to hold on to Y too long causing a full hop. This is not me asking why I can't SHDF, this is me asking if other people have experienced this issue where fair doesn't come out because they hit A too fast after jump.

My main question is that if I'm running left to right normally and try to shf, my success rate is really inconsistent. However, if I shield during the run and shf oos, my success rate goes to about 90% without me noticeably changing my input timing.

Is this all in my head or is there a difference in the short hop out of shield that can account for the change in consistency?

I feel like it's kinda hard getting frame perfect sh fairs with marth, because as you said sliding doesn't really work because marths jumpsquat is so long. In fact I can't even slide attacks from y to a with fox, because y is so close to a.

What I do is I use c-stick, so it's almost impossible for me to go too fast, but I'm still easily able to do sh double fais. It's also easier to control your movement then.

It's probably because your hand position is slightly different when you are pressing shoulder button, and you also have to release the button at some point, so the exact same motorics don't work . You might need to practice a little bit for the sh fair from run.

Good to know this is an issue others have noticed. I hadn't seen any mention of the long jump squat animation making it difficult to time the A properly.

I've had some success shdf from the right, but like most people find it very hard to consistently get the shdf from the left side using the c-stick. Are you able to consistently get the df from the left? Maybe I should revisit this, I'm sure with practice I could make it happen.

This is a good point even though I shield with L and don't release until after the fair, so it's not obvious how it's affecting my input timing, though I don't doubt that it does.

Thanks for the insight, I'll keep working at it.

Well, I use X, so I do it a little differently. But it is a little difficult. I just try and do the inputs as fast as possible. Usually when facing left I will slide from x to the c stick, and from x to a going to the right. It takes some time.
