I bought a wii u without gamepad (go ahead and laugh) so I can't connect online without pad however I found someone that has a gamepad I can use however they don't want me to take it home with me cus I guess I'll steal it. So can I take my wii u to their house to connect online and maybe match my router settings to theirs or am I gonna have to talk them into letting me take theirs to my house

Short term, you'll need to get the gamepad to your place so you can not only configure but perform a connection test for your internet to make sure it works right. (After the test, you can set an internet configuration as your default and have the Wii U auto log into that credentials when it boots up for faster startup of features.)

Long term, look at Nintendo's refurbished site and buy a gamepad. The system doesn't work without one. (Most games can be played without it, but all configurations from internet to sound setup for home theater systems to getting your system unlocked if the password is locked and more require it.)
