Query regarding Sheik's needles

Upon landing on the ground Sheik's needles stay in place for a while. If they collide with hitboxes they seem to somehow delay an attack which occasionally leads to a beneficial situations (such as your grab connecting before opponent attack does). Could anyone explain how exactly does this work (frames & other data)? I'm wondering whether needles could be utilized strategically this way somehow? As a bait/trap?

Needles have hurtbubbles and keep lying on the floor for a few seconds. When you hit them, you go into normal hitlag. This can be beneficial as well, as the hitbubbles have longer total duration (+X frames, where X = hitlag).

That's random though, isn't it? Sometimes a needle bounces off and disappears, and sometimes it sticks to the ground.

It seems to be random (time-based RNG that also seems to be influenced by sh/fj?) whether they bounce off or stick to the ground immediately, but they never disappear immediately. Even when they bounce off, they will keep lying there for a few seconds (feels like 2-3, but I haven’t counted the frames yet).

There's definitely some gimmicks you can come up with involving needles but nothing really solid enough to use consistently. Just good to be aware of how they work so you can react to and capitalize on situations that might come up. Here's an example of my favorite needle gimmick, although its against sheik q_q, baiting out an attack with link's dair, and then the dair autocancels after the bounce: http://gfycat.com/FirsthandCleverFunnelweaverspider
