Project M not working on older Wii.

I have an older Wii that is known to have disc drive problems. For regular games it's fine, but for games where the disc has double layers (like Brawl), it has problems reading them. Getting Brawl to work can be annoying, but after taking it out and putting it back in a few times, it will finally read it, and then have no trouble reading it during actual gameplay. When I get it to work, I am able to launch the hackless Project M launcher. The only problem is, when I click the play button on the launcher, it needs the disc to spin up again. Because 99/100 times it won't read on the on the first time, I get booted back to the Wii menu.

Now I know that Nintendo support would fix faulty disc drives. The only problem is that my Wii is out of warranty, and therefore it would cost $80 to fix, which is something I am not willing to pay.

I am also aware that there is an official Wii cleaning kit. I do have it, and did use it many times, but had no luck. Every time I clean it, there doesn't seem to be any sort of dirt on the cleaning pad, so it probably isn't doing much.

Is there any way to fix this?

Hmm, considering that you mentioned it has trouble reading discs, you'd come up better if you just bought another wii from the pawn shop, even here where they're $50.

Though are you sure you don't just need to replace the disc? Have you tried using another person's game?

I know it isn't the disc itself because:
1. It doesn't have any scratches
2. I have Metroid Prime Trilogy, another dual layer game, that also is having problems.

I would also rather not get another Wii, as I would like to keep my save data and virtual console games, and it would be weird to have another Wii just for Project M.

Ah I see. I thought there was a way to use USB loader to run P:M on wii? or can you not use the wiimmfi servers on the USB loader version?

It would suck though, but your only other option aside from that is to go into your wii and try and switch the drives out yourself. If you can get on cheap then I say go for it.

If you have an original brawl disc you can play with a normal iso copy of your disc.
It's legal at 100%

With a backup launcher you can bypass your problem.
