Step 1: Obtain a BRSTM. These can be found at http://www.brawlcustommusic.com or http://forums.kc-mm.com/Gallery/BrawlView.php They can also be made by hand if you know how to do it.

Step 2: Rename the BRSTM to the correct song id you wish to replace. That list can be downloaded from my post,

Step 3: Place file in the "projectm>pf>sound>strm" directory.

Congratulations, you have custom music.

How are they made by hand? If there are any resources for this I would like to see them.

There are numerous ways to go about creating them and several tools you can use; the most popular/convenient (imo) being Brstm Converter and BrawlBox

The real difficulty is the looping aspect of BRSTMs, which requires an audio editing software such as Audacity or Goldwave. If you prefer your music to loop properly or perfectly, then I recommend getting one (I use goldwave).
If you could care less and only want the song in the game in some shape or form, then BRSTM Converter is all you need. You run the program, set the loop type to "Loop start to end" press ok, and select your MP3/Wav. It'll convert it for you and that's it.

If you do prefer proper looping songs, then a combination of Brawlbox w/ audio editor is the way to go. A lazier method with BBox for getting loops is to open a .wav in brawlbox (click file>new>Brstm audio stream) and adjust the sliders until you feel as though it loops ok enough. I detest this method because it doesn't follow a proper protocol and can ruin loops imo.

For perfect loops, I've made a tutorial of my own utilizing Brawlbox and Goldwave. Recommended if you care deeply about quality control. You can watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TT6LaIsldyk
This method may feel time consuming at first, but once you master it, you'll be pumping out quality loops in no time.

The last, last, last alternative is to ask someone else to make them for you, like me. Though that puts the requester at the mercy of the maker's schedule.

i like to use brstm converter. it works for what i want. it loops back to the beginning of the song after about a one or two second delay after the song finishes.

How do you change the name of the song so it displays the proper name at the beginning of each match?

@Xermo: Never recommend someone use Brstm Converter again, use BrawlBox, or better yet, brstmmake.
@DeathangelQ: The file that controls the song display at the beginning of matches is MiscData[140] in info2/info.pac (and all the other info_xxx.pac files), while the file that controls song display in the "My Music" options is MiscData[7] in menu2/mu_menumain.pac.

Brstm converter is fine, what are you talking about. It isn't the brstm gui garbage, if that's what you're getting at.

Using Brawl Song Manager, you can easily change the song title at the beginning of the match. It does not change the name in My Music, however. I got my information from this video.
He doesn't really go into looping though.
Credit goes to TKbreezy for the video, it was also posted on the Smashboards home page a while ago.

Replacing anything in the game is as simple as knowing the file path on the hard copy disc.
