Project M launcher problem

Never downloaded or played project m before. It was all going very well until I went to the brawl stage builder and started up the pm launcher. I clicked update and it updated, then I pressed play and it took me back to the wii home menu. I clicked on brawl again and repeated this process several times in a sad attempt at getting a different result by doing the same thing over and over again. It really is one of my lowest moments.

tl;dr How do I do this? Please help

What I normally recommend to do when the Project M launcher isn't working is to try loading via Gecko OS instead:

• Install GeckoOS to your SD card (download link, copy the boot.elf from /Gecko1931/HBC/Gecko1931/ to your SD card root)
• Load GeckoOS via the Stage Builder, as usual
• Boot game

I did that, and now I just get a blank screen after hitting play on the launcher. I'm not sure if that's better or worse.
