If I were to go to a big tournament for example, would the Wiis there be running PM from an SD or the Homebrew Channel? Is there some reason that one gets used over the other, or is it just a matter of what the supplied Wiis are set up for? I was just wondering if it is considered questionable to play on Homebrew Wiis, if that's the norm for serious players, or it really makes no difference to anybody.

People bring their own wii usually, so it boots off whatever that person uses.

You'll find quite a few setups will be heavily modded too, though I personally think it looks ridiculous.

My Wii is pretty much a PM machine, so I think I'm going to set up Homebrew to boot straight to PM if that's even possible.

I believe you're referring to the Hackless and the Homebrew methods. You should know that both require SD cards. The Hackless method isn't a hack, but takes longer to start up because it exploits the Stage Builder mode in Brawl. The Homebrew method is a hack, and is faster because it uses the Homebrew Channel and can be started up from the Wii's home menu. That's the only way they differ - the method used to start up Project M. I doubt tournaments differ between the two, and just use whichever the providing Wii owner uses since there isn't any difference between the two in terms of gameplay.

I already knew that the versions were identicle, I was just wondering if using homebrew would be frowned upon in a competitive environment.

It shouldn't. It's like saying that hacking would be frowned upon by gamers of the Project M community.

Well, I figured that there may be some other catches along with homebrew that could affect the operation of a game. I'm not an experienced homebrew user, so I wasn't sure if there could be something of that sort.

I think it's fairly obvious to say, really Homebrew is just a tool that helps achieve the a goal of loading Project M faster - it only can cause damage if you use it incorrectly. Or set it up wrong.

I hate having to go threw Brawl to play, so I use Homebrew. Plus in the hopes the custom stages make a return, it might be needed.
