Doubles is too much fun, we just did me+my scrub friend vs my brother+my other scrub friend for 5 sets of 5 matches each. My Mario and my friend's Link beat Fox and Marth, 3-2

Ivy might be the best doubles partner. Denti made her look crazy good. She's hard to edgeguard in a time efficient manner, she's great at gimping, and she's a floaty tank that heals. O_o

I guess something I'd like to hear is general game plans when in doubles. I have only been doing doubles recently so I don't have it all figured out.

All I have down is:
-Throw/hit my opponent at the other opponent so they have less options
-If you're opponent is off stage and unlikely to be edgegaurded, double team the other opponent
-Try to have the opponents in the middle if the two pairs of 1v1s are close to each other
-If you're teammate is being comboed, stop the combo
-Occasionally attack the opponent in the other 1v1 if your backs are to each other

That's about it... Oh and when it's 2v1 wait with a grabbed opponent while your teammate charges a smash :p

Any other general tips? And/or are any of my general rules wrong (or do they have exceptions)?

I made a double discussion like a year and a half ago but it died because no one wanted to talk about the better metagame >.>

doubles is too much fun. Theres just so many different team options, and having more people on the stage makes some character's risky options safer in general, while strong pressure/stage control in singes isn't as strong.

Really teams is split between the support player and the carry. Generally the support wants to space, zone, and back up the carry as the carry goes in HARD. They don't necessarily have to stock tank, and in particular their stocks are worth less compared to the carry character as the carry would be the one who is more likely to put work in. <thats why stock tanking is good, but if you are focusing the support player the carry has all the space/time he needs to do what he wants unpressured.

Often times its not necessarily the character, but the player that defines the role that they are playing. some people are better at separating the team and going in, while others have better awareness and are better at helping teammates. Perfect example is M2K teaming with anyone, M2K just sits near the opposite ledge of the action and controls space while his teammate goes in, and if things are going badly M2k shoots needles and pressures closer. but still just looking for gimps.

Fox is like the definition of a carry character. But he also can just use his mobility to support and control space, and only going for safe combos and gimps. Generally characters with more mobility have the potential for both roles.

The support/carry team archetype is easy to pick apart: Fox/jiggs is arguably the best teams combo in melee because they both have potential to get quick stocks, while Fox can cover jigglypuff's weaknesses (no approach and vulnerability to rest punishes/ pressure) while jigglypuff does the same for fox (stock takes, can use air moblity to quicky get over and get fox out of a combo, fantastic air control helps relieve offstage pressure) and they both have stupid stock taking potential.

Another good example of support/carry stuff would be Ivy/Fox, Ivy serves similar roles to jiggs by controlling space and getting easy gimps, with easy healing and recovery stalls for stock tanking.

Then of course you get Carry/Carry teams like double fox or two aggressive players. That team absolutely destroys if they have momentum but once they lose it they dont always have the synergy/team coverage to deal with a come-back. Although they probably are the best team for 1v2 comebacks.

Support/Support teams are common as well and sort of just play by chiping away at the opponents stocks while never dying themselves. The best example I can think of is Hbox and Plup's Jiggs/Samus.

My favorite teams in PM are pretty much Diddy/anyone with a good item game. Fox/Ivy is really good too, I also enjoy M2/any carry player, and Ivy/Kirby with good synergy for solarbeam junk.

Doubles is beautiful.

Thats about it but you can always try to make a 2v1 situation.

The spacing is game is more intricate in Doubles, and thus more of a mess. It's a really fun metagame which requires a lot of situational awareness from you - you can be the best player in the world but it won't matter if you're not a good teammate.

What paradigm would Ike fall into, would you say? I tend to play him as carry but I could see an argument for support.

Yeah, doubles is more fun when the load is about even or you can ride your teammates coattails. :p
One thing that can be irritating about doubles matches is when your partner doesn't keep the other opponent off you.
I'd prefer simultaneous single matches where you could switch the matchups than the random, unorganized chaos that occurs when I usually play doubles. Doubles is so much tougher when you have to worry about two characters instead of one.
