Professional Gaming Defined: How Many Exist?

Hi all,

I wanted to ask what I feel is a valuable question in regards to gaming as a whole: How many professional gamers truly exist?

Before you answer, allow me to clarify. “Pro” is a term frequently tossed around the smash community, usually used to define any top level player. However, this is not the proper definition of a professional gamer. It’s true definition, and the one I’m using now, is (among others) a person participating for gain or livelihood in an activity or field of endeavor often engaged in by amateurs. I myself consider anyone able to financially support themselves solely from videogame tournament winnings as a professional gamer, even if they are scraping by with 25,000 a year or so.

So, how many professional gamers do you think there are? How many do we have in the Brawl and Melee communities? For that matter, how many competitive players do you think we have? By competitive, I mean a Melee or Brawl player that attends at least a few tournaments a year. I would ask the same questions to those of you who might have the answer for other gaming communities.

My last question is how much the elite video game players of the world are currently making? Back in my starcraft days, I remember well that SlayersBoxer was making around 450,000 a year, which at the time made him the gamer with the highest income (though I remember USA’s Johnathan Wendel did pretty well too around the same time period, winning 150,000 in a single tournament alone). However, these examples are extremely out of date, and I imagine the newest wealthiest gamers are making even more than these two. Does anyone know the answer to this?

I don’t want to explain my theories or reasons for asking these questions yet as it may collude the type of responses I get, but I do believe the answers to these questions would be extremely valuable to the community as a whole.

My thanks to anyone who is able to contribute an educated response.

generally though, you gotta be pretty close to top tier to make a decent -- great amount of money

and i am pretty sure that nowadays, sc1 titans like flash and jaedong probably make upwards of 300k-400k+ a year in addition to bonuses from winning korean tourneys which give i think about 40,000-50,000 although there are only 2 major ones and they take some time to finish

Thanks for the responses Werekill and S2J!

We all had the same thoughts. I was going to make a similar post on the TeamLiquid forums. I was unable to do so immediately because my old TL account is long dead and I had to remake an account (they do not allow new users to submit posts right away).

So the top Sc1 players are still making a lot of money? Amazing! I would have thought they would be making far less than that given the addition of SC2.

Hayato told me about an upcoming COD tournament with over a million dollars in prize money distributed amongst the top 32 players. I've always known the FPS games to be the most popular USA games, but I was still impressed.

Does anyone know the current estimates on smash players winnings? It's been a while since I've read anything on the topic, but I knew Ken did pretty well with his tournament winnings since he secured a lot of MLG wins (which typically had the largest prizes of any smash events). I would imagine that M2K probably has made the most money of any smash player at this point overall (since he was top ranked at both games at some points). Has anyone ever calculated his tournament winnings?

I was aware that Ken won enough money to pay for college/university. It's been years since I've read any Smash news tho so I may be wrong.

Yeah, I remember hearing the same thing. MLG was pretty key in that equation since they paid for a lot of his flights/tournament housing. Travel expenses add up VERY quickly for players that have to pay for flights and hotels. Southwest has made flights much more reasonable than they used to be, but its still very expensive.
