Problems with controls

Alright, I'm a Pikachu player, and I have a really annoying problem that gets me killed all the time.

Whenever I land on a platform and I try to go down, I smash my control stick down, but Pikachu just spams his crouch on the platform, so I can't go down. This is annoying when I try to escape an attack and I get stuck here.

Another thing is when I try to grab someone. I stand right next to them, and I press Z, but Pikachu starts spamming that shield, and I miss a grab.

One last thing is when I try to use my smash moves with the a button. I tap A while tilting forward (or some other direction), but Pikachu just stands here, and do nothing. Nothing at all, not even a move or anything, just nothing.

Well, these ****s happen all the time and it is REALLY annoying, I keep getting killed because of these. Do you guys have any explanation for these? It really starts to get on my nerves.

there is a set amount of frames where you can't drop from a platform. i think it's 30, but i'm not sure. with this in mind, the fastest way to get down from a platform is shield dropping.

Another thing is when I try to grab someone. I stand right next to them, and I press Z, but Pikachu starts spamming that shield, and I miss a grab.

you are probably pressing z before you exit the lag of something. when you hold down z from when you're in lag, you will light shield.

One last thing is when I try to use my smash moves with the a button. I tap A while tilting forward (or some other direction), but Pikachu just stands here, and do nothing. Nothing at all, not even a move or anything, just nothing.

smash attacks require you input a + (whatever direction) at the same time to work, so that's either you inputting it wrong (look up kadano's diagram for the control stick positions) or your controller is malfunctioning.

You should ask if you can borrow someone else's controller for a while to test if it actually is the controller that's the issue, I'd reckon it's just what Comet7 said though, it doesn't sound like anything a controller would have influence on.

When you land, you enter a 30 frame landing animation. After 4 frames this animation can be cancelled by pretty much anything (attacking, shielding, walking, etc.), but not by platform dropping. If you land on a platform you can immediately Isai drop (buffer walk->drop) or shield drop. Also, you have to hold the control stick down for at least 2 frames to drop (therefore smashing it quickly enough that it returns to neutral by frame 2 won't result in a drop).

I answered the same question from someone else here: http://smashboards.com/threads/the-...rs-gamecubes-etc.288887/page-18#post-18814689
Basically, just don't grab when you're in lag. Use L/R+A if you're going to grab after lag so that if you grab too early you can keep holding shield instead of immediately releasing it.

One last thing is when I try to use my smash moves with the a button. I tap A while tilting forward (or some other direction), but Pikachu just stands here, and do nothing. Nothing at all, not even a move or anything, just nothing.
You have to smash (not tilt) the stick to do smash attacks with the control stick. I'm not sure why nothing at all would be happening, but my best guess would be that you're trying to do it during lag so your input is getting eaten; in which case you should wait until you're free to act before doing your inputs. Does it still happen if you're trying to attack from standing/doing nothing?

Remember that Melee does not have a universal input buffer like Smash 4 and Brawl do. If you are switching between games this can throw you off a lot, so try to make a conscious effort to adjust to having to time your inputs more precisely in Melee.

For the landing, I'll check those techniques, thanks. I doubt I get used to it tho, I might just grab on the platform or jump out.

Use L/R+A if you're going to grab
Ohhh.... well thanks, it solves the problem! (I didn't know you could do that lol)

And for the smash moves, I have no idea really. Maybe my controller have some problems with double inputs, I'll borrow my friend's controller.

You will get used to it. Isai dropping is really important, and not at all difficult; pressing down while walking barely even deserves to be called a "technique". Even if it was legitimately difficult, intentionally limiting your options because you don't want to learn tech (or in general, because you don't want to put in the effort to consider/learn/execute something) is a really bad way to approach the game.

Shield dropping is extremely useful in a large amount of situations (I'm sure you can think of applications for being able to drop through platforms out of shield). It's definitely something you should learn, though only after you've learned the more fundamental advanced techniques (wavedashing, L-cancelling, etc.) and gotten somewhat comfortable with your movement in general.

You could also have a super laggy TV, I know I had problems like that where I felt like half of my inputs weren't working one time, then I switched TV's and I was fine. I'm not really sure but look into it.
