Problems launching Project M

Today, i discovered that Project M does not work on my Wii, but it works on my Wii U. i would like to use it on my wii so i could use gamecube controllers. the problem that i'm having is that when i hit play from the launcher of project m, it goes back to the wii menu. is there any fix for this?
