Problem with Character Skins

Hey, i'm new here and new to the scene in general and i've been attempting to add custom skins to Project M

Now after scouring the internet i've managed to solve a few of my problems but this one has me scratching my head

Ok so when i open the fighter files to add a new skin theres supposed to be a list of FitDudeXX.pac and .pcs but when i open them some of them only have maybe one or two or even in some cases none. I have tried to just write FitDude00.pac on the files i've downloaded and stick them in the Project M folder so that it just takes the spot of the default colors with no avail.

Can anyone explain why my fighter folders dont list every costume option ?

Is this something in 3.02 or am i just missing something, i'm wondering because i want a DeDeDe skin but his folder is empty and when i put the texture in there with a random number it doesnt take the place of any costume.

Fighter folders don't contain files for every costume because most fighters just use the default costumes, which are loaded from the disc rather than the SD card.

For all fighters, FitFighter00 is the default costume.
FitFighter01 is the red team costume. Characters whose default costume is red (e.g. Mario, Dedede) will not have a FitFighter01.
FitFighter02 is the green team costume. Characters whose default costume is green (e.g. Luigi, Link) will not have a FitFighter02.
FitFighter03 is the blue team costume. Characters whose default costume is blue (e.g. Marth, Lucario) will not have a FitFighter03.

Most characters have costumes 04 and 05. Some (usually those whose 00 is red, green or blue) have an 06, some go up to 09, and Wario has up to 11 (00-05 are his "traditional" overalls, 06-11 are his biker outfits).

Picking a random number won't work. The number you want to replace must already exist among either the disc's or PM's default files (cBliss can let you add more than the defaults, but you need to be able to replace character portraits and such to get the most out of it - even then it only goes up to 09). So something like FitDedede47 will never work, but FitDedede05 will (this replaces his purple costume). You just put the file on the SD card with the correct name, and it'll load over the original.

Thanks a lot this was really helpful so i guess i'm not crazy i'll try this out and see i it works, and i didn't mean a random number like 47 lol just like from 01 - 06 it wasn't working before but i think the texture i was using wasn't compatible with Project M

If you're using homebrew, try changing the Ocarina hooktype to AXNextFrame. For backless, replace the boot.elf with the one from Gecko OS (in the /Gecko1931/HBC/Gecko1931/ folder), and change the setting in Loader Config.

  • Install Gecko to your SD card (download link, copy the Gecko1931 folder (under /Gecko1931/HBC/) to your apps folder)
  • Load Gecko from the Homebrew Channel
  • Go to "Loader Config"
  • Change "Hooktype" to AXNextFrame
  • Save your settings
  • Return to Gecko main menu
  • Boot game

I believe it's a similar process for most other loaders, except the PM one (which lacks the option).

wow thanks so much that worked too, so does this mean i'll have to load through gecko instead of project m all the time ? seems inconvenient but hey whatever works i guess

Looks like it. I don't know why the PM loader doesn't include the option, but as long as you saved the settings, you can just go into Gecko and hit "Boot game" and it should load every time. It's not as pretty as the PM loader, but no more inconvenient.
