Problem reading Super smash brothers?

Is not me, is my friend, i use an alternative source of reading games.

In his game, we can't choose yoshi, zelda, fox (sometimes), ness, and a lot more.
if you choose certain stages or certain characters, this message appears:

The disc could not be read (etc etc)

So he tries to put the cd back on, it works on 25% of the times

I would like to know how to fix that indoors, because his mother won't let him spend money with games AGAIN.

What should we do?

I used to have that problem, my game wouldn't read characters that had a P in their name. I found the only solution to it was getting a new disc. I thought it was my wii and sent that back to nintendo, I tried numerous disc-fixing methods and none of them worked.
