Why are they handed out in terms of time and not in terms of debt paid back to society? In other words, why can't someone be put in jail until they've paid back their victim? Like who does it help when A has to sit in substandard living conditions doing nothing for 20 years for clawing B's eyes out? It seems like justice would be served much better if A was forced to toil in the fields or excavate sewage or write code or w/e until B could afford daily massages for 20 years.
They do have community service, but that generates wealth for the state. Why not implement a system whereby the convict generates wealth for the victim?
