You should have included the Hori minipad as an option, given its popularity.
People use keyboard? How does that even work?
Emulator or adapter to the n64.
No I mean using wasd for a game with an analog stick. It sounds terrible
Not really. Just buffer tilts and you'll get used to the controls. Me on KB is better than me on controller.
Look up a guy named EZ Killer on youtube, he plays keyboard.

This question is asked in a way that won't provide a proper response from the community. The thread title is, "Preferred controller" whereas your poll question says, "What would you say the optimal Smash 64 controller is?"
While some people may prefer a keyboard, it's possible that they believe that an original controller is optimal. I would suggest asking this question again, clarifying the question and adding more choices.

This is just an estimate I make based off observations at console tourneys (this does not include popularity online):
1st party 64: 85%
Hori: 10%
3rd party 64: 3%
Xbox: 1%
Keyboard: 0.5%
GC: 0.4
Other: 0.1%
Take Apex for example, there were like 4 or 5 xbox users, 3 keyboard users, a handful of horis, maybe a GC, a couple third parties and the rest were 64 controllers.

I saw one guy in top 8 with this really weird 3rd party one...

LD had an Xbox controller. Every other top 8 player had a 64 controller or hori.

Oh the Hori is so good, if it wasn't so pricy/rare I'd buy it immediately. I semi-prefer it over keyboard, especially for Falcon and Pikachu.
