Practicing with an Xbox controller?

So I'm currently getting into the Melee scene. I've been practicing using the dolphin emulator along with the 20XX hack pack, but I currently don't own a good gamecube controller or an adapter.

Is it a bad idea to be practicing(especially tech skill) with an xbox one controller till I get a good gc controller and adapter?

I've never actually done it, but I know a local kid who started with an xbox controller, and it didn't seem to slow him down too much. I'd get a gamecube controller as soon as possible though once you get into more advanced techs.

I'm attempting to get a good one by next month. Hopefully sooner.

One or more people have asked this before, and you're going to get the same answers. Take the time to do a quick search.

I started with an xbox oxntroller myself. After like 2 months i got myself a gc adapter and controller. It will take a while to get all your tech skill on point again. L cancelling and wavedashing won't be too bad but some of the more advanced thing will take a bit longer. Also just playing and using it all again in game with a new controller will take maybe a week or 2 to get used to. You do already know what buttons to press and you probably have some knowledge of the game so that's nice.

Yeah, I think you should save up for a GC controller as soon as possible. Tech skill that require the B button such as multi shining, falco pillaring, etc. is a lot easier on an xbox 360 controller because the jump button is right next to the B button. So it's best not to get used to that because it could take long to adjust to the GC controller. But, I've never used an xbox 360 controller for Melee so I wouldn't know exactly what it's like. But however, I have used the wii classic controller to practice shine cancels in smash 64 and it's a lot easier so I'm just assuming.

Just came back to check on this thread and I got gc controller yesterday along with an adapter. So far it seems doing tech I used previously practice on an xbox controller is not so hard to pull off. Feels about the same but it's taking me a bit to get used to the new button layout as I sometimes mistake some button presses..

Yeah, especially the B button can feel really weird in the beginning

This sounds like an epic side tournament - play with xbox controllers and suddenly everyone will suck. It's probably worse than 3rd party gamecube controllers.

It does, multi-shining feels like the only tech I need to relearn entirely since the timing seems awkward for me now.

Seems like a neat little side of playing in a tourney.
