General discussion about different character types(in my eyes, it's okay if you don't perceive them in the same way!)
I split my characters into 4 defining characteristics where each character truly excels in one of the characteristics with a secondary. Basically speaking I group every character that are heavy hitters, speed oriented characters (characters that depend on fast instances of damage), skill (spacing and prediction, notice how my definition of skill IS NOT playing ability), and aerial (juggling in the air, edge guarding, and command of the stage). Although there is some gray area where characters can fit into these categories, I will leave that up to debate and just describe each category. For each category I will list 5 of the most representative characters I have seen within these categories. Remember these have a lot of gray area so if you don't agree with me neither of us is wrong.
1.) Power
These are the characters who are heavy hitters, the characters who essentially pose the most threat when at a lower percentage. Normally they are characterized as heavy and slow moving characters, but this has changed in Smash 4. Power Characters are the ones that don't hit very often, but when they do it is extremely strong. They do have a weakness of being the slowest class, but is able to punish the most effectively. Power Characters are the brick walls, if you don't pay attention to them too carefully, you will get hurt. I recommend using Power Characters if you like being able to do a lot of damage without chaining attacks and instilling fear into opponents early game.
  • Ganondorf
  • Little Mac
  • Bowser
  • King Dedede
  • Ike
2.) Speed
These are the characters who surmount a lot of damage due to combos or the ability to strike first against a neutral (the position in which both characters have no leverage over the other). Weaker than Power Characters of course, but can easily rack up the damage in the form of true combos and easy hits, such as projectiles and jabs. Most of the time these characters can be predictable but even then it is hard to prevent given they have so many true combos. They have a weakness of being relatively light and easy to push around in a combo as they have no strong form or retaliation, but it also goes for the other way around. I recommend using Speed Characters if you like to trade off frequently and slowly watch the color run out of your opponent's face.
  • Greninja
  • Sonic
  • Pikachu
  • Sheik
  • Fox
3.) Skill
These are the characters that rely on spacing and prediction in order to deal the most effective damage. The characters who will have to place themselves relative to their opponent in order to control the battle and play the opponent. This play style differs against each person and can either be very rewarding or very punishing. As a weakness and a strength, Skill Characters rely on how the opponent acts and tries to react in such a manner that's beneficial to their own sake. As I said before, each character has their own play style in the Skill category, but all share one common aspect. Spacing is key when using a Skill Character, and as such, stage selection affects Skill Characters the most. I recommend using Skill Characters if you are consistent in attacks and good at prediction. Such a character can also create frustration within your opponent or yourself.
  • Robin
  • Marth
  • Villager
  • Rosalina/Luma
  • Zero Suit Samus
4.) Aerial
These are the characters that rely on juggling and disabling opponent's options in the air. Edge guarding maniacs, Aerial Characters will control the skies and prevent the opponent from touching the ground. Aerial Characters make use of short hops and their DI to move around the stage and continuously deal damage. Similar to Speed Characters, they dish out damage in constant combos and devastating edge guard hits. Often the ones with the greatest recovery, but poor movement on land, you will usually see the first attack an Aerial Character do is an aerial attack. This does make Aerial Characters somewhat predictable, but it is easy for them to KO you at early percentages if they can get you off the stage. I recommend using Aerial Characters if you like playing off the stage and making use of every jump you have.
  • Jigglypuff
  • Kirby
  • Peach
  • Luigi
  • Captain Falcon
Of course the only way to know which play style you fit in is to try out some characters, keep an open mind too as each character has different proficiency in each group. Also I find it good to practice some of these other characters within the same play style if I seem to hit a block with a certain character. For instance, I wasn't able to play Jigglypuff well for a while until I started experimenting with Kirby and Peach, and then came back to Jigglypuff with new ideas in mind. Hope this helps and feel free to ask why I characterized each character in such group or which character belongs where.

An interesting breakdown. Very similar to a video someone once linked about how the character categories of Mario Tennis could be applied in theory to Smash characters. (I can't seem to find the link right now)

It makes a broad sort of sense I think, but most characters don't fit neatly into the categories.

For example, Little Mac. You listed him as a Power character. While he does have certain characteristics of a Power character (high damage output, dangerous at low percentages) he is incredibly light, speedy, and rapidly attacks with combos. So he also fits in the Speed category.

The Aerial category as a whole is also an odd case. It really seems to be just a subcategory of the Speed class (even by your own admission). Indeed, many Speed characters can exploit the air by their very nature.

Any attempt to specifically categorize Smash characters is definitely interesting and can be useful for thinking about what play styles you might like to try. However, I think it only really works broadly and is highly subjective. Most characters are adept at two or three different sorts of play styles, depending on the player, and can't be pigeon holed so easily.

Still though, cool thoughts and a noble endeavor.

I really like this thread and the concept. Another sort of analysis was performed on r/smashbros, which produced some interesting and thought-provoking discussion. While I'm not trying to start a tier list discussion or anything of the sort, this thread attempts to categorize characters by 'playstyle'. Of course, everyone plays a character differently, but here's the thread in case you haven't seen it: https://www.reddit.com/r/smashbros/comments/2mzu4g/since_tier_lists_are_stupid_lets_try_to_organize/. I don't really like the word 'gimmicky', but it was used, in my opinion, to illustrate a point.

I personally find that you could almost incorporate your own categories into the ones listed on the graphic. Captain Falcon would be Offensive/Aerial/Honest (or Balanced, since he sits on the middle of Honest/Gimmick), while DHD would be Defensive/Skill/Gimmick or whatever you want to try and classify those characters as. Of course, as I mentioned before, everyone plays a character differently and in the end whatever we come up with will never be 100% correct. It's still fun to think about though.

The Philosophy of Smash would be an interesting book.

I knew someone was going to question this aspect XD. I classified Little Mac as a power character due to his attacks. Although he is very fast in terms of ground his comboing potential is not very high, which puts him out of the speed tier. However I do understand that I titled my classifications incorrectly. Mostly due to lack of a better word, the speed characters are the ones who are able to consistently keep combos up. I added the aerial characterization (I originally had 3 classifications) due to their ability to only keep combos once a certain condition is met. I also agree that categorizing each character into one specific category is very hard, and I only classify them in order for people to learn different characters within similar play styles. Thank you for helping me clarify this!
