We know now that there is definitely spoken speech in Brawl, thanks to Snake’s codec transmissions shown in the Shadow Moses Island stage update. What we don’t know, is whether characters will continue to talk in the Subspace Emissary mode. It is likely that the characters shown are the ones in Subspace Emissary, and that no other characters are being revealed because of this. Either way, there are some characters who should be definitely speaking.

Mario – Yes. Mario ahs spoken in all of his 3D games, and it has been more than grunts. He could not talk a lot, but it would be awkward to see Mario without any spoken dialogue.
Link – No. Link should only have his trademark grunts and yells, and should stay quiet. Smash is not the right place to start having Link talk. That’s up to the Next Legend of Zelda game.
Kirby – So-so. Kirby tends to say a few words here and there, but not too many. He tends to say his name, grunt, say hi, and cheer here and there, and should not stay mute completely.
Pikachu – So-so. Nothing outside of Pika pika possible, so, pretty much nothing he can say. Although, I wouldn’t be surprised if Pikachu said it more than once in SE.
Fox – Yes. He has spoken in every game he has appeared in, with only 2 of his many games having bleeps and bloops because of limitations. We’ve heard him talk in SF 64, Assault, and Adventures, so he should definitely be talking here.
Samus – No. She has never talked, and she never will.
Zelda – No. Same reason as Link.
Bowser – Yes. He spoke full out in Sunshine, which was a shock for most fans. He also has technically spoken in Galaxy and SM 64. He should be saying a few words here and there.
Donkey Kong – No. Nothing more than some yells and grunts.
Yoshi – So-so. He has the same situation as Pikachu. Yet, he could still yell at times.
Peach – Yes. She has spoken in Sunshine and Galaxy, even though they were only pleas for help. Still, she could say a word here or there.
Ice Climbers – No. Only yells like they had in Melee are possible really, because in there only game, well, there wasn’t exactly a lot of talking.
Pit – So-so. Yes, he has talked in a previous vid, but he shouldn’t be talking too much, for the same reason as the Ice Climbers.
Wario – Yes. He should definitely yell out his signature yells and shouts. And, with the recent vid showcasing him kidnapping Zelda, I wouldn’t be surprised if he did.
Zero Suit Samus – No. No chance in hell.
Ike – Yes. In Fire Emblem, Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn he has spoken. Albeit, his English voice actor is a bit bad, and he could be changed.
Pokemon Trainer – Weird Situation – HE has never spoken in the games, yet if he’s based off of the Anime, he might talk. Maybe he’d talk when commanding his Pokemon. Also, there could be a situation where has to fight another Pokemon trainer in SE.
Diddy Kong – No. Only shouts and yells for him.
Meta Knight – Yes. He has a voice in the anime, and it was confirmed that he spoke in-game when videos were leaked of him in his winning pose during the winning screen, saying “Victory is my destiny”, in a deep gruff voice. Plus, apparently he has a huge importance in SE, so he’s most likely saying something.
Snake – Yes. Of all the people here, c’mon. He’s already confirmed to speak in-game, so really, if he\’s a mute in SE, I’ll be forced to strangle someone.
Lucas – No. Nothing outside of yells and cheers, cause we have never heard his voice before.
Sonic – Yes. He’s spoken before in pretty much any 3d version of his games, and he spoke in his Joins the Brawl trailers, so yeah, he’s talking.
King Dedede – Yes. He talks in the anime, albeit having a strange voice.

Future updates will be added. So, do you think differently? Will Link finally say his first word?

Pokemon Trainer has talked since Red.
"It's not very effective...."
"Shoot! It was close too!"
"That's enough Grass Rat! Go Rapeasaur!"

Silver777 I'm not trying to go against you or anything but are you sure Dx3 never talked in any of the games that he appeared in? I had a Kirby game on N64(forgot the name) and I think he spoke in text (ex: Link, Red, Zelda etc.) Just saying is all.

well, I actually never played Kirby 64...:urg: he really talked there??

I played ALL of the 2d Kirby games and he never spoke in any of them, Meta Knight only spoke in Kirby Super Star too.

I actually forgot to say that Kirby talks IN the games too. he only say short lines but it counts.

DeDeDe never talked in ANY of his games apperance, why are you basing this on the anime??
Speculation: In one of the updates DeDeDe says 'Right back at ya' which is from the anime. This could mean that Sakurai is taking things from the anime.

Yeah, this depends on whether you mean that they've spoken in game, or actually been voiced in game, because Samus, Zelda, Yoshi, Diddy, and DK have all spoken in their games, they've just never had a voice actor.

Does anyone have a link to the vid of Pit speaking during the victory screen? I really want to hear it.

Sakurai was involved in the Kirby anime though. He was the one who decided that Kirby should not be able to talk, asides from these well-known words, in the anime.
