Hi everyone!

Firstly sorry if this is in the wrong place (don't think it is) or if this has been disscussed before.

So, everyone here is probably aware of the New 3DS coming to Japan 11th October -8 days after smash releases in the west. Everyone also probably knows about the 'C-stick' this New 3DS has (which is the problem):

What's going to happen if you face someone with the New 3DS? They'll be able to use the c-stick while you won't, it'd be like fighting someone using a gamecube controller with a Wiimote+nunchunk. Depending on how many people in Japan get the New 3DS you'd have lost the match against a Japanese player before the fight even starts! Now, I'm not saying that it's impossible to beat someone with a c-stick but it defenetly is hard -especially when they can do stuff you can't.

We could end up with this problem for possibly over half a year and do nothing about it. Even if the CCP is compatable it probably won't be as good due to it's bulkyness and the possition of the acctual CPP, and the Japanese may be able to c-stick easier and quicker.

I know people have talked about the New 3DS being unfair but this takes the unfairness to a whole new level, as if it released the same day internationally then atleast you'd have the option to get the New 3DS but this way you can't even if you want.

The only thing I can think of right now is adding an option in game which lets you only battle against people in the west but Kid Icarus: Uprising did't have (IIRC) that option and there's a good chance this won't either!

What do you guys think? Will this be a big problem that could potentially ruin the first 8 months (or longer) of online smash for us?

Welcome to Smash Boards! I'm sure this is the right place to post, so don't worry about it.

As for my answer, I'm not worried the slightest bit. I'm just using the 3DS version to adjust to the games new mechanics, speed, and characters. I'll also use it for recording down damage outputs of all the characters. So I won't really care if I get my but wooped online since the only reason why I'm getting the 3DS version is to record down information.

Also, the new 3DS has a c-stick and two Z buttons, I can honestly play without the z buttons and put grab and shield on X/Y If I wanted to. As for the C-stick, it may give Japan an advantage for pulling out Smash Attacks, but I'm sure that after a week of the games release, people will quickly adapt to playing without it here in the west (or wherever you live)/

It's not going to be that big of a deal. If all it takes for someone to be better than you is a c-stick in a different location then chances are they were going to beat you anyways.

this exactly.
it gives them a slight edge, but unless you're pretty close to equal level it's not going to make a noticeable difference.

Thanks for the Welcome!

2 Perfect players. Same character. One has c-stick and the other doesn't. Who's going to win?
The problem is that there are going to be some stuff the guy with a c-stick can do that the other can't. This won't affect me as I have a Wii U to online smash on but I could see it being a problem for those who want to play competitively online on the 3DS version.

Plenty of people used the Wiimote + Nunchuck set-up in Brawl, which didn't have a C-stick, and did just fine. This won't be a problem. Theorising that two perfect players will have their victories determined by a C-stick isn't nearly strong enough to actually create concern about online play; no player is perfect, no player will play perfectly and many people prefer to play without the C-stick anyways. Everything will be just fine.

EDIT: This is with regards to online play. If we're talking about major tournaments, then it's more of an issue. The ways around it that I can think of are using the CPP if it's compatible or... well... investing into the new model for the sake of your Smash career. :p

A single c-stick will not make such a difference that, if you're playing online and not attending major tournaments, would be insurmountable. If you have timing issues on smash attacks, that's something you need to work on anyway, and if the air to ground balance is as nice as it looks, the ability to aerial without changing momentum will not be nearly as vital as it was in past games.

I wouldn't worry about it. Just learn to fight with what we've got, upgrade later if you really want.

Thanks for all the replys everyone.

I'm relatively new to competitive smash and I'm sure that this won't be a problem if all you more experianced smashers don't think it will be.

Sorry for bringing up such a pointless point. I kind of worried myself and thought I'd discuss it with more experianced people. :)

I'm pretty much with everyone else. Some people find it useful, but I've never really relied on the c-stick. It's just not necessary.

As for grabs, I have ALWAYS shield+attacked to grab. The placement of the Z button on the gamecube controller pretty much nailed that coffin.

The only thing I'm really worried about with the 3DS is the fact that I've worn my shoulder buttons down to sawdust playing Mario Kart... and the placement of the face buttons goes against the Gamecube controller grain. However, I've been playing Brawl with the classic controller, and getting used to my controls of choice (a and b = attack, x = special and y = jump)

I'm actually looking forward to no c-stick because I think many melee/brawl players rely on it too much (including myself).

People who want to play at such a competitive level that a C-Stick might matter aren't likely to be playing randoms online.

when playing someone from japan that C stick is gonna be barely an issue compared to the humongous lag you will get. I wouldn't worry about it
