Do you think Smash run could be good in tournaments? Ever since it was revealed I thought it would make for an interesting tournament. (and I don't mean to replace normal tournaments)

Even taking the grand final match of normal tournaments and making them Smash Run match could make for a interesting twist.

What do you guys think?

There is an immense amount of RNG involved, so I doubt this is ever going to happen.

I'm not sure. Like Hong said, there is a lot of RNG involved, so many of the stat gains are pretty random, but it sounds like it might be a fun basis for a tournament if enough people are ok with how random it can end up being

For a real competitive tourney, I can't see it happening due to the above reasons, but for a fun, throw together or maybe side event, it'd be a lot of fun.

Perhaps a Side Event. That's the extent I can see Smash Run being as far as competitive. Too many reasons which were mentioned above. Still could be possible. After all we have Crews as a side event usually. Who knows.

I'd totally like to see it as a side event of some sort. There's definitely some merit to putting people in randomly generated situations and seeing how they react. Everybody might go for different powerups, take different paths, equip different items - a player's personal style can really shine in something like this.

I think it'd be fun as heck for it to have a tourney. I mean yeah random number generator and all that, but you know what? I think that's part of the fun.

I'm aware of the RNG and, like RPGatWill said, I think that would make Smash run tournaments fun and a nice challenge.

I think that it would be fun to see. Yes, there is an RNG, but it doesn't seem to be near as bad as some series.

If nothing else, it would be a fun side event for those who aren't in an official tournament.

I imagine Nintendo might host a Smash Run tourney one day, but I doubt any competitive tourney would host it.

Hmm, maybe for Smash Run since it seems most fun with for players, you could throw everyone in a pool. Then randomly pick names of people to play against each other. 1st gets three points, 2nd two and 3rd on point, while 4th gets zero. That way it's completely random! Minus your character choices of course. Gotta let people have that. Once everyone in a round has gone (preferably having like twelve people so like 3 matches per round) you throw all the names in the hat and start over again!

Do that 3 or 4 times, and the person with the most points wins! OR have a final round where the top four point scorers face off in a final smash run.

Definitely for fun, and to show off knowledge of the mode's workings. As numerous have said, though, the amount of RNG involved will keep it from being a major event. I'd totally play, though.

It should have tournaments of some sort. If Pokemon and Kid Icarus Uprising can have tournaments, this can too.

I don't see it really working. You spend 5 minutes basically playing on your own and then you play a 30 second match (if stamina, otherwise it's still only 2 minutes). The appeal of smash run is the run itself imo, which is sorta like a speedrun, but it's not really fun in a tourny setting since everyone will just be competing on their own. Then the real match is the actual decider of who wins, which is contradictory because a majority of what causes someone to win is still their skill in a "normal" ish match.

I wish smash run could have been designed in a way where the 4 players would interact with each other instead of just doing their own things in completely different areas of the map. Maybe if it was a smaller map and mobs/challenges respawn, then it would be interesting with people taking their own territory, taking challenges before others can, killing more mobs than others, etc., and possibly even without the random match at the end (the smash run itself is the match, instead of just being a training ground before the actual match).

I highly doubt the map will be so huge that you can't hunt down and harass your opponents. At least, not if City Trial is anything to go by.

I really hope so. Actually now that you mention it, I didn't really know how big the stages are. If the level of interaction is at least City Trial then I think that'll be really cool!

At a glance, it looks similar to the Underground Maze from Melee's adventure mode, size-wise. But it will also depend on the layout (particularly, if it varies or is always the same), events, and if there are cross-map shortcuts (kinda like the monorails in City Trial). There's a lot that could be different in the final version compared to the E3 version.

If it does turn out to be too big to really interact, I think it'll end up as a sideshow or maybe a "tournament" among friends. But if it has settings options and the like and is robust enough to allow for different playstyles or strategies, and maybe some way to limit/choose the endgame match mode for consistency, then I could see it catching on as a fun alternative to NO ITEMS FOX ONLY FINAL DESTINATIONS competitions.

The problem that comes up with Smash Run being in tournaments is the fact that, like others said, there's so much RNG involved that makes it hard to say that it's "fair." Additionally, as of the current moment, it's also completely random what game you're doing afterwards, so you might not be doing stock, and might be doing a coin match or whatever. It'd make a lot of people mad, I think.

But personally, I'd be all for the thing if somebody could make it work right. I guess I honestly don't think it's possible and I really think it should be kept to friendlies and friends and whatnot, but hey, if somebody makes it work, I'm not going to tell them they can't do it.

Final destination has never been a neutral competitive stage. what are you talking about?

Air Ride had an option to choose the end-of-mode challenge, I think (as well as things like adjusting the time and events), so I would actually be pretty surprised if Sakurai didn't include that.

I'm sure you could organize one via Smashboards. But the final match after Smash Run isn't always a battle (or a stock battle), sometimes it's a race. Though, it's possible you can choose in the final version and the random element was just for the Demo.

Hopefully. I suppose a randomized event at the end would really kill any chance for a tournament. I hope it's something that can be chosen then.
