Poke-Tentional co-existance with Melee.

There is a chance this game focused on balancing characters by focusing on individual match-ups having a rock-paper-scissors dynamic. Characters also have custom moves. - To me this sounds like the key to ensuring this game and Melee co-exist rather than split the fanbase.

Imagine going into tournaments with five characters chosen, all with custom moves. You play best of five, with your opener for that match chosen ahead of time. From then on loser picks second. Perhaps even include some approved equipment that doesn't exceed limitations.

Could this Pokemon esque addition prove the basis of an alt Smash scene that could thrive alongside Melee instead of being mutual detractors? Or is the fact I am unintentionally historically blind and deaf in regards to competitive scene giving you reason to wish I was illiterate?

As far as that Pokemon-esque game-type, it sounds cool but it wouldn't work in tournament simply due to the extreme amount of time and organization it would take. I can see it being fun to do though.

And when it comes to Melee, I don't think there's going to be too much competition between the scenes to where they'd detract from each other. If anything I think there will be people moving over to the other and growing both. The games are so different that it's almost like they're not fighting for the same space anymore. You have your picturesque, fast Smash game, and you have your newer, albeit slower and less technical Smash game that is equally as fun as the other. I'm hoping to see overlap between the two and want to see both Melee and Smash 4 grow alongside each other and have the communities exist equally.

You make some very good points, but I am a bit confused why you feel it would take too long? (Granted organizing it does seem like it'd be a bother at first).

Having five matches in each set (I believe that is what you are saying) just wouldn't be feasible in most tournament settings. As it is, having 2-3 matches in brackets and pools already sends most tournaments hours into overtime. Doubling that would make tournaments impossible to complete. I know it seems like a superficial reason but it really just is how tournaments work. In addition to the time, you would need a third party to verify your five selections so that you don't counterpick someone based on a specific matchup and use a character that you didn't have before. We have these kinds of things already with Double Blind matches, but those are only ever higher up in bracket and not for every single set of pools as well.

Would I be wrong to say that my idea could be improved upon by reducing the number of characters from five for best of five to three for best of three?

Well you could reduce the stock count. Still I think it just wouldn't work as well for actual tournaments, but I do see it being a really fun idea for a sort of side event, almost like a crew battle but instead different people switching out you have one person with different character. It's a cool idea, don't get me wrong.
