Is there a big transition from going from Project M to Melee? i am half decent at PM but I wanted to know if most of the knowledge translates.

Not too much. Both games have similar techniques. Timings are a bit tighter in Melee, but it's not too much more difficult to learn how to do them. You might have to get used to not having custom controls, maybe. There's no l cancel flash which can make doing it consistently more difficult. There's nothing in the transition that you'll need to worry about

It depends on what character(s) you play. Some are mostly the same (Fox save for weaker lasers), others are drastically different (buffed) in PM (e.g. G&W). The engine itself is similar, but it can be difficult to adjust to smaller timing windows. One thing that won't be an additional hurdle is learning matchups, though. Fewer characters are viable in Melee. You also can't turn tap jump off in Melee; I know this is an issue for some players.
