I'm a long-time Smash player who got into it when it first came out on the Nintendo 64, but I've never been a competitive player or been particularly good at the games I play. Even if it is only against the CPU for the most part and sometimes a human (I can't travel to competition) I'd like to find a main and a few secondaries for me to work on the mechanics of things so I'm up to speed (or at least better off) when SSBB comes out.

That leads me to my question: what characters would you personally recommend for a starting-out newbie like myself to main/secondary? I'm specifically wondering about characters that wouldn't necessarily be easy to pick up and play, but ones that would teach me all about mastering the basics of the game like WD/shffl/CCing and such while keeping in mind that until SSBB comes out I lack any way to fight human players.

Oh, and I don't mind what tier the characters are in that much. I personally have an aversion to using top tier characters actually and prefer to work from the mid-to-low tier characters in games. My love for Raphael in SC2 should speak to this.

For wavedashing I recommend Luigi, Ice climbers or Marth; not that hard timing wise and easily noticable if you did it right.

Lcanceling would be link and ganodorf; again easily noticable. As for shuffling Captain Falcon might be good due to his play style revolves around it.

CCing low tier wise would be Yoshi although anyone with a good dtilt or dsmash is good.

As for choosing a character it depends on your play style or mindset. But for the most part top tiers are the ones that utilize almost every advance tech i.e. Capt Falcon(Middle tier) has no CC game while say a shiek(High tier) does.

I like fast characters or aerial based characters and I don't really like projectiles so I use Captain Falcon, Fox, Marth and Jigglypuff.

But keep in mind Brawl might be completely different(unlikely) so I wouldn't stress advanced tech so much if you are just waiting for Brawl.

I'm playing to enjoy the game and I enjoy getting better, so that's one of the motivations behind my wanting to get more in-depth in SSBM, so it isn't 100% just for SSBB coming out. Thanks for the tips on who I can use to practice the basics.

No problem, also if you are unsure of a characters play style just look at some vids on youtube and see if you like that style. Good way to learn what to use and when as well.

Also for people to play with if you check the regional boards there might be some people near you that might be willing to travel to you or something of the like.

Dude, don't let anybody decide for you what character to use. My advice is to just have some good old quality time with Melee and just go with the flow.

Marth is a very good character to learn competitive Smash with. He's got a pretty common jump timing, so wavedashing with him is a useful skill; he has a varied game and suits numerous styles of play, so you won't become restricted as you learn. And, of course, he's top tier when it comes to range and spacing. Learn how to space his moves well and you'll be a very competent player.

Apart from that, pick characters you like and are comfortable with. Any character you're motivated to learn should be open as a choice for you.

i'd try mario on for size, he's good for learning to apply all of the techniques you mentioned, has good comboing options, is mid tier and can hold his own decently either way

We can't really tell who you can main, since no one really knows your plaing style but you. Try out a character from each class of the game. Try out heavy weights, light weights, middle weights, swordsman, wavedash, fast, slow, ect. Try to find someone who you feel comfortable playing. After practicing with some characters you like, you will pretty much decide for yourself who is your mains, and who are your secondaries.

thing is that he seems to have a very specific idea of what he wants to learn from a character, and that's why he's asking
