Can I simply not play the game until I get an SD card and pop it in? I'm out of town and I can't really get one at the moment, but I'm hoping there's some sort of workaround so that I can at least practice some advanced techniques. Anyone have any advice?

The 3ds comes with one, did you take it out?

3DS should come with one.

Wii U doesn't need an SD card (only for trophy photo mode and to save screenshot.)

Although I have never tried playing without an SD card, I would say it is logical to be able to play without one however you wouldn't be able to take screenshots or anything that would actually require the sd card's data. But you should have known by now, Nintendo wont let you play unless you have one specific requirement. If you don't, you're ****ed.

I've actually done this before. I have 2 3ds. One is my aqua blue 3ds and the other is the red smash 3ds xl. I wanted to test if group play can work between the demo and the full version (which didn't work). I already had my old data from the blue 3ds into my red smash 3ds xl including the demo. So all I had to do was put the cartridge on the 3ds. My blue 3ds doesn't have an sd card because I used it on project m(it required a 2gb sd card so I had to move my 2gb sd card data and move into the 3ds xl's 4gb data on my computer). So I tried playing on the blue 3ds and it turns out you can play it without an sd card but you won't be able to save anything at all in the game.

Here's a short answer if you chose not to read it all: you can play without an sd card, you just won't be able to save at all.

If your game data requires an update to be used, you won't be able to access it without an SD/SDHC card.

The main thing to keep in mind is that once you've accessed your game data after downloading update 1.0.4, you "must" have that very patch to continue using your game data, or else you'll be forced to play a new game that never saves.
