Before I touch on the topic I want to discuss, here is a little story.

So a group in my local university was holding a Project M tourney a couple of days ago. I went there after I was done studying for my test for the day to entertain myself watching people duke it out in a few matches. There were also people in there who did not participate in the tourney at all and were playing the Smash Bros. 3DS demo instead.

I happen to have my teal colored 2DS with my Smash 3DS demo installed and I had the intention to play a few matches against a few people. As soon as I pull my 2DS out of my backpack and started playing, people literally came to me and, to my surprise, they were telling me things like:

"I have never seen a 2DS in person."

"Can I hold the 2DS just to get a 'feel' for it?"

"It feels like gaming on a Game Boy Color."

People were perplexed, literally, that I was using a 2DS to play Smash Bros. At some point, I even let a total stranger play a match with my 2DS.

Their overall reaction was quite positive and the reasons were that the 2DS "felt" much better to play Smash 3DS than on a regular 3DS because of the larger shoulder buttons and the 2DS' form factor perfectly fits your hands (thus making it more comfortable than the regular 3DS). I seriously didn't notice those reasons until now because I bought my 2DS due to the fact that GameStop was selling them for $100 so it was a cheap alternative to buying a 3DS.

So my question to you guys will be the following. Do you prefer to use a regular 3DS, a 3DS XL (because of the large screen), or a 2DS (because of the reasons listed above)?

Keep in mind that the New 3DS and the New 3DS XL are out of the question (because they are obviously better in every aspect).

I have literally only seen one 2DS in person and haven't had a chance to get a feel myself. I have been incredibly tempted to buy one, but...

None of my friends have the 2DS but that's because we all either bought the regular 3DS or 3DS XL first. I like the look of the 2DS (reminds me of a thin slice of cake) and have no complaints about from what I have seen. I think it was just one of those things where I bought the earlier product first and haven't had the need to buy the 2DS. If my 3DS XL burns out then I will most likely buy the 2DS since it seems like a great, cheaper alternative.

As for playing the new Smash Bros, I guess I answered my own question. I will be playing it on 3DS XL. However, it does cramp my hands if I play the demo for too long. So, I've had to order one of those grips with the extended triggers to fit my needs. I have heard that the 2DS is a lot easier to play Smash on though.

I've got a 2DS myself. I can confirm that it feels a lot better than using a normal 3DS, or even an XL.

I have a friend who has a 2ds. I've held it and its pretty comfy, but I prefer folding handhelds.

A friend of mine recently bought the 2DS, since it was cheaper and all. I grabbed it and played a bit, and it's pretty comfy. The reason I prefer the 3DSXL for something like Smash, however, is the size of the screen. I never have to strain my eyes even if the characters are far and things get hectic.

As far as controls go, though, it is intuitive.

To expand more on the point of the 2DS being comfortable to game on, I remember back when I used to play Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate on my XL and after an extended session of it, my crampy hands were screaming in pain. When I play with the 2DS for extended periods, I don't get crampy hands at all.

IMO it depends on what you want. I have realized that 2DS is the way to go due to comfort (I don't mind the small screen). But if you find the gameplay a bit grainy because of the small screen, go for the 3DS XL.

I've got one friend that had(key word here) a 2DS. I told him not to get one, to just get an XL or a regular 3DS. He had it for 4 months before the screen got cracked.

Not saying it's a bad system, the size makes it comfortable, but unlike the DS, DS Lite, DSi, 3DS, and 3DS XL, it doesn't protect its own screen when not in use.

As for comfort, you can get some really nice controller grips for the 3DS/XL that are VERY comfortable and make it feel just like holding a controller instead of a handheld system.

True. Having a grip for comfort on the regular 3DS or 3DS XL makes the validity of the 2DS being a better option obsolete but I'm on a budget (and I'm assuming most people in this forum are on a budget). If anyone is on a budget they will most likely go for the cheaper alternative.

At the beginning, I underestimated the 2DS and my original plan was for me to get it as a temporary replacement and ditch it as soon as I had enough money to buy the New 3DS XL when it comes to the US. But now my opinion about it has changed for the better.

I still want the New 3DS XL though...

Even though I feel that the 2ds feels more comfortable compared to the XL and regular 3ds, I honestly cant stand the rough edges on the bottom of the system. Those two edges makes it uncomfortable which might not make any sense. I only bought it as a cheap backup in case my circle pad breaks from smash 4 lol

I haven't ever tried a 2DS so I can't really compare it, but for me the 3DS XL feels great and much better than the 3DS. I've only had my 3DS XL for about a day, but after many hours of the Smash 4 demo I've had no cramping or pain. I do likely have much smaller hands than most others here which could be why the 3DS XL feels as good as it does for me.

On its own, my 2DS is slightly more comfortable than my 3DS XL, but my hands will still cramp after about 15-20 minutes of continuous play.
When it comes to grips though, the 2DS Trigger Grip is much more comfortable than any 3DS grip I've tried.

So if you want to smash on the go, for a few minutes at a time, I would recommend a 3DS/3DS XL with no grip.
That way you can fit it in your pocket and the screen is protected.

But if you want to smash for extended periods of time at home, I recommend the 2DS with the Trigger Grip.
That way you can play for hours with no risk of cramps.
