Playing Random sure has its drawbacks...Help!?

Hello smashers,
I'll cut straight to the chase. As of about two weeks ago, I decided to pick up the seemingly pointless and nearly impossible task of being good with every character Melee has to offer; from the top tier Fox all the way to the bottom of the barrel, Kirby. Now, i don't mean I want to learn how every character works and know their gimmicks and understand their play style, no - I want to play EVERY character at a HIGH level to the point where I can go to tournaments and pick random, knowing that no matter what character I pick, it will be at the highest level of play (obviously, some drawbacks are bad MUs, natural low tier being naturally bad and therefore unviable in competitive play, etc.) My drawbacks are far from that. I'll tell you my problem first, then give a backstory, then I'd like to see if anyone can help.

MY PROBLEM: I've forgotten how to play my best characters, in terms of spacing, combos, movement, and mindset. I feel "sticky", meaning my movement is far from fluid as it used to be (dash dancing, dash attacking, wavelands etc.) and i've forgotten how to combo with combo dependent characters (luigi, marth), and quite possibly the worst thing is my comfort in spacing and approach, which i've suffered a lot, and I can tell.

WHAT I WANT: Help in how to get back into shape in terms of playing high level with 3-4 players instead of 26. Should I fight CPUs? Should I practice ledge techs? Should I take a break from smash? Any advice would help, and tell me if the journey to become a random main is worth it! Thank you :)

BACKSTORY:
I first came out as a Fox, Yoshi, Marth, and Dr. Mario main (hence my name, FoYoMaDr.) My list expanded to characters like Falco, Luigi, Peach and Captain Falcon. One day, I was playing friendlies and my friend decided to pick Kirby, and i scoffed at him since Kirby is the worst character in the game. He actually took me down to one stock with my Marth, and I was very impressed. Then I made it a mission to get good with a bad character as well, and that character was Zelda. I actually became a very viable Zelda, after watching Cosmo and the Lake videos. I felt comfortable in playing with Zelda, and decided to try out Netplay with her. I ended up taking Gold III with mostly Zelda, and I had a burst of happiness since a bad character was made decent through practice. Suddenly, I had a new mission. Since I was able to take a terrible character and play her at a high level, why can't I do that with every character? Thus began my journey of becoming a Random main. Now, At that time, I was good with about 9 characters. I was decent with another 10, and the remaining 7 i've never played before, and I would require a heavy amount practice in each character. I ended up making my own tier list based on how well I perform with that character, and from there, I started with my worst character (Ness, in this case) and ended up looking at all the tech necessary to be decent with him. He was so entertaining to learn, I made video tutorials on how to do his Yoyo Glitch (which if anyone was interested, is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KZezL5uUNhQ) I got really excited because I saw progress with Ness, and moved on to learning other advanced techniques with characters I wasn't experienced with (Wobbling with ICs, Super Wave Dashing and Extended grapple with Samus, Chaingrabbing with DK and G&W) and as of yesterday, I was Silver III maining Random. I was really excited, up until tonight when I played a Silver III Marth (which in this case, I got Marth) and knew that I was superior because my marth is Gold tier.

I ended up losing. I could not space, combo, ledge guard, I basically FORGOT to play Marth. After taking the loss to the Silver III I went to Bronze I, and with my new found knowledge of losing my skills with top players, I ended up losing with my best characters (Peach, Fox, Luigi) and got discouraged, got on my main account where I only played my good characters (Gold III) and proceeded to lose to Silver IIs. I went down to Silver III, and Then I went back to the drawing board, playing CPUs, when I realized I don't have the touch I used to have with my good players. Now I'm here, explaining everything that has happened to me, and now I'm wondering if everything will be okay and if I'll ever get my mian skill back and being great with 3-4 people instead of being decent with everyone. What a Dilemma!

If you want to get good, just keep at it, and practice til your eyes bleed (not really, don't sue me). Random main isn't worth it though.

if you really want to become good with everyone, just use one character constantly to improve yourself as a player by beating the challenges that are eventually thrown your way.

trying to use everyone is just going to stunt your growth by a ridiculous amount

Thanks for the advice Saiblade. I'll be sure not to sue you, besides, eye bleeding runs in the family ;)

And i'm more intrigued by your second sentence, I like the idea of having random as a main since it makes me recognizable in tournaments, and can possibly inspire other smashers to pick up other characters if they see wonky matchups! I'd like to know more from your side of the opinion as to why maining random isn't worth it, though. Thanks in advance!

I figured it's pretty similar to real life when you're making gains by working out and doing an excessive amount of cardio at the same time. Cardio kills gains and stunts muscle growth, so it's better to be focus on one side, then do the others, rather than simultaneously do both. So I agree with you there. What do you suggest then, should I just stick with 5 or so characters and just learn matchups? or should I focus on someone for a long time, then switch after a certain amount of comfort?

Playing too many characters at once will thin out your skill. Instead of being very good at 1 character, or good at 2-3, you'll be almost not bad with 26. Some of the characters also just don't stand a chance in tournament play. Lastly, there's just TOO much for you to learn. P.S, please refrain from double posting, in the future I'll have to give you a warning, other mods may even infract you, I just merged your posts for now.

You'll still be learning global tech and a bit of MU knowledge (but really 80% of that MU knowledge is useless at a high level since no one plays those characters)

You just need to continue with the characters that come naturally to you, the ones you can actually switch to randomly and you find that you easily remember how to play with them and use them efficiently.

For me those characters were Pikachu, Ganon, G&W, Link, and Puff.

It's best to try and start with only 1-2 and get really proficient with them. .Then the global tech becomes second nature, you can rotate a bit once you get results.

I actually have probably practiced the most with Mario since I first got this game, but I just suck with him for some reason. Nothing about his approaches, timing, L-cancelling, or spacing clicks with me and I tend to lose the most when I try and use him against local top tiers. It's strange but that's just how it is, I do feel like I wasted time investing in him (it's just me though, I know he's an alright character).

Thanks for the advice. What I think I will be doing is investing times in my current mains (Marth, Fox, Peach, Yoshi) and develop them again, and then, since now I have a pretty good idea on how each character feels, will decide accordingly as to what character I should focus on for high level play. I would love more feedback, but this will do for now! thank you

You better know your matchups LOL.
Actually, I don't know too much about MUs so I do need to work on that! Also, I'm honored that you're posting in my thread, Ace. Don't know why, but I know you're a popular dude around here. Also, We live close by each other

There is some overlaps of abilities among characters, but in a sense, maining random will divide your skill by 25 or 26 (How do you determine whether to play Sheik or Zelda?). If you're unlucky on your random selection, you're going to get out charactered, probably significantly

If you want to be known for maining (semi) random, I suggest limiting yourself to the tournament viable 8 to prevent that problem

Don't know why? Lol me either. I just joke a lot and give solid advice whenever possible. Maybe I'll see you at versus gaming center if you play melee or pm.
