How come no one plays on LAN? I played a guy on LAN for a few games and it was fine, there was no extra lag or anything. I hope its not the same reason it took so long for ppl to switch from good to excellent, which was pure laziness.

I lag out about 2x as often... once every 2-3 matches when I'm playing on LAN compared to Excellent.

Once someone figures out why the lag out problem exists when playing on a server and fixes it, then I'll happily enjoy a consistent 1 frame delay on Galaxy 64. :)

well, using lan has the probability of causing a lot more dses, as you are sending 2 times the packets.
and just one packet drop = ds.
the funny thing is that kaillera uses udp, which is the protocol used for quick transfer, but does not assure all packets arrive (this is used also for streaming videos) but unlike streaming, if you lose a packet in kaillera, auto ds.
however, with that said, all of us in europe use lan for our matches, and it works quite well, yes it dses more (not near what a$ gets) but it is worth those extra dses in the end.

Lan connection is useful if your delay on excellent is like 5 frames or more; otherwise, i wouldnt use it

In Europe everyone uses LAN pretty much exclusively and I haven't had any extra problems because of it, despite having an iffy wireless connection. LAN should be used more in North America.

lol, I remember when I was one of the only people trying to play on Exc way back in the day, and everyone was basically calling me an idiot for trying to get people to change because it was "pointless."

Your post just made me very interested to see what I can do about that, if there was a way to rewrite the server to TCP and not UDP, I'm interested to see if alot of the problems would disappear. I will definately take a closer look at this.

there is no way, as tcp takes too long, also playing real time, resending dropped packets will do you no good as the time in which to use them has already past.
the best way is to make the emulator itself packet drop resistant, like try to see how you can handle a frame drop (this is really complicated)

I dont think its so complicated, you only have to copy other online game systems that support frame drops and handle them.

lol nix, do you have the source code of other games, and moreover, there are complications that just do not allow you to use the same code as in other games.

I said system, not source code. I suppose you dont need to get the source code of another online game to find out their system to handle packet losses... Amirite? :ohwell:
I know different games dont work the same but you should probably get some ideas...

you are way wrong, otherwise, you need to sniff the transport and understand the packet structure, and understand which fields do what.
do you have experience researching internet protocols? (i am assuming not) it is not simple.

only reason that changed is because If people wanted to play good people, they had to play on exc xP. Back on topic tho.

LAN desynchs MUCH more from my experience, I dont have issues with desynching myself (unless galaxy is PMS'ing that day or something, and almost never in p2p) but when i play on LAN I find others desynch 80% of the time in the second match and the rest in the 3rd match.

Nope, I never did online game protocols... -.-
All Im saying is, if other online games handle packet loss, why not kaillera games? Yeah maybe its difficult but not impossible

im thinking because other online games are built for online play
kaillera only syncs over the net the players input, and cheats and save file.
i cant think of a proper way to explain it
but basically kaillera is a great concept and feature, but could probably never compare to the online reliability of... socom ftb2 for psp or something

sounds like we need a kailleraX project and start from scratch

I think LAN rocks, but not everyone has good internet...

I've taken to LANing and ping spoofing so that I get one frame. One frame is godly. I can rarely find anyone to play, though.

The problem with playing on LAN is double the packets, which results in double the chance of a corrupted packet causing a desynch. It is certainly playable with those with stable connections, however.

Moogle, have you tried troubleshooting your lag issues? Try bypassing your router if you have one, and switch plugins, emulators, computers, and at other houses. Try to remove each one of the clients connecting to the router one by one to see if any of them cause issues. You can try switching network adapters, too.

LAN's the best. No question. Everyone go on LAN-strike so that these Desynch-hatin' nubs get their act together.

malva00: why is it better than pj64k?

KoRoBeNiKi: Really? And do you have to rename the file or change anything?
Graphics are overall better due to a better plugin, it runs more frame relevant compared to offline (The big difference, it is much more similar to offline).

Basically, it is an overall better emulator but no one bothers using it and it is bad for anyone with a bad computer as it takes a lot of room.

FWIW, when it came out and a lot of people were trying to (get the server to) switch, I tried switching too, but my old computer couldn't handle it and ran it at a constant 45FPS or so.

A lot of the desynching is caused by the emulator. Although mupen uses more resoruces, it desynchs much less. More people should use it but the lack of gameshark makes it a bit more tedious for new players (downloading a save file)... of course, there is always mupen beta, which also works well.
