Play the character you like the most or play the character that's the most fun to you?

Just a little question for the community. Which do you prefer? I also ask this because at times I'm torn between mains. I know Falco and Mewtwo are my definite favorites in Smash, but there are also these characters that are extremely fun to play as. Like for example I love Sheik's design. The character just flows for me because I really excell at good movement, optimal spacing, jab resets and my grab game. Or Samus who is just altogether stupidly fun to play with a lot of depth to her character. It's because of this that sometimes I waver from Mewtwo, because I'm feeling as if another character would suit my playstyle more. So which do you think is more important, and will ultimately help me stick with a character in the long run. I want to say pick your favorite but then again I just can't completely commit to that statement.

In theory these should be the same, except in cases when future game updates ruin the characters who you like and they stop being fun anymore.

*cough*

Its a good thing that the character that I like the most is also the character that I have the most fun playing with.

But I dont have fun playing characters I dont like tho. MK is my favorite character so far to appear in any smash game, but I just dont like his playstyle therefore I dont like playing as him and Im okay with it.

It should but I'm an exception here.

Meh. Updates can't ruin a character for me you just have to adapt to the changes, I say this even with the eminent Mewtwo nerf that's upon us. Probably because I generally don't play overused characters in Smash. I play who I started as a casual with. Unless they just so happen to be good, Falco happened to be one of those characters. I actually want Mewtwo to be nerfed because of the Wooping Bandwagon that came after EmuKiller. Way too many fraudulent Mewtwo's out here, I swear.

I play a character from a franchise I love, his playstyle was the first I learned and actually forged how I play other characters.

I do find more fun with other characters now that my style is more defined then from 2.0, but I still have so much comfort with Ike I don't care. So I use him when I'm srs.

And Meta Knight when I'm scawed.

I find when I really attach to a playstyle of a character I like them more as a character. I never cared for Wario at all until messing with him in PM and seeing how much I like his gameplay design. I do however fry try characters based on visual design or other elements but I am not someone to force myself to main a character who's gameplay don't work for me.

I usually pick whatever character I tend to do best with, though I may not necessarily enjoy them. Ike in PM is a prime example. I feel at home with Ike, but also think he's boring as hell to play, lol.

I play MK for both reasons. Meta Knight was always a favorite of mine in the Kirby games and he my very first main in Brawl, but I didn't like how he was mega broken in Brawl... Project M made him PERFECT!!! I love how he mindgames and tech chases and combos. I love having many options for recovery and is aerials are amazing! At first, I thought he didn't change much from Brawl and I wouldn't like his playstyle but I was SO wrong. Choose Sheik. I too am a massive Pokemon fan but I hate how Mewtwo plays. I know he is good and people really like him but he doesn't fit me.

Well it's not really that I'm forcing Mewtwo's playstyle on myself. My 2 is pretty nasty. I feel like I could potentially do better with other characters, if I invest the same amount of time in them as I do Mewtwo.

Little column A, a lot of column B. I loved playing MGS and Snake as a character so when he got introduced in Brawl I wanted to unlock him to main him and that's when I stumbled upon Ike and fell in love with his play style. When I unlocked Snake I loved how he played too and no other characters really felt the same way as they did to me. Then when I was introduced to Project M (a week before 3.0 came out) I played the new iterations of these characters after playing Melee for a while and found that they were even better than their Brawl counterparts, especially Ike who feels perfect too me now. Playing Ike got me into Fire Emblem and I got to like the character Ike from playing his games as well as playing him in Smash. My favorite Nintendo franchise prior to playing Smash was StarFox and Advanced Wars and I do like playing spacies just not as much as I do with Snake or Ike so it can go either way imo.

I would be another example, I do best as Dr. Mario in PM
but I find playing Zelda is more fun.

Although I have no worries for Sm4sh, Rosies #1

i've loved the star fox franchise as a kid so i mained him, i would play link but i was never any good with him and i never thought he was good in melee. Also everything about fox just feels right and his combo game is insane.

I gotta admit that I'm not very technical, so I play Wario. He doesn't require learning that much tech. Pretty much just dacus and side-b cancels. I learned him to get my fundamentals down. I wanted to make the move to other characters, but I wanted to jump into competitive right away so I made due with improving my Lv69 Wario instead of retraining my Lv12 Mewtwo or Lv30 Samus.

I played Lucas and Ness in Brawl cause they're my favorite characters. Would still play them in PM if they were boring. Luckily they're both enjoyable for me.

Then I play C. Falcon cause he's hella fun. (Who doesn't want to knee people in the balls midair?)

Also getting into Falco. I think he's pretty fun, an a cool character. So win/win.

Play the character you enjoy playing as. Before brawl I didn't even know who Ike was but I loved his playstyle even though he wasn't great in brawl. I also loved lucario's playstyle but when I played PM for the first time I couldn't get into his new playstyle. Ike still has his general feel though and has become my favorite character in smash bros because I have grown attached to him playing him so many times. And he is the main reason I decided to finally check out the fire emblem series with Awakening. Now I need to get my hands on Ike's games.

Yeah, if you side-b into a wall, you bounce off of it, which can be useful for scaring people off ledges. However, if they're on stage trying to poke at you, then that bounce becomes a liability. In that situation, you can tap (or hold) back on the control stick to cancel your side-b and instantly sweetspot the ledge, keeping you safe.

In addition, if you side-b from a platform and land without jumping, you will have no landing lag. Like, zero. Like float cancel-levels of zero landing lag. Both of these techs are called SB cancel, but one can only be performed while grounded and the other only while aerial. So specifically, the first one is aerial SB cancel (or asb cancel).

I've historically always played as my favorite character as my main-est of mains (:falcon64::marthmelee::marth:). The rest are just characters I don't dislike, and other characters I like and am good with (:pikachu64::drmario::roymelee::ness2::falcon:). I guess go with whichever sort works best for you. If you really prefer winning, then by all means, play as whatever character you're best at that you perceive is highest tier. Otherwise, pick by what you're a fan of, regardless of strength.

I play Ike because the Tellius series is my favorite in the Fire Emblem franchise.
I play Meta Knight because he's my favorite character from the Kirby series.

Almost anyone else is simply because of play style.
