Smash Wii U Play Smash wii U without updating? HOW?

Shouldn't there be an option to skip the update and go straight to the game at the update screen?

You would have to modify your Download Management settings so that all downloads are paused. Even if you were to startup your software immediately, it won't prevent the update from being downloaded while you're playing.

I'm pretty sure you have the option to just start up the game, but like the post above says, you might have to cancel any updates that are going through in the background.
On the other hand, maybe turning off your Wi-Fi or disconnecting your WiiU from the Wi-Fi before the update finishes? It's a little inconvenient, but I think it's the only way the WiiU wouldn't try updating the game by itself when you shut the console down or something.

Go to the internet settings and delete the one you play online/download stuff with.
Frustrated me last patch that I had to do that to get my replays backed up... something I didn't get the chance to do this time.
*sigh*
We REALLY need an upload to youtube option for replays... The fact this wasn't standard/pre 1st patch that would break them is absolutely freaking neglectful on the devs part.

That is as bad as not having it for me...
NEEDED to be 10 minutes...
The argument that it would take forever to convert and upload is valid... but if it was an option I'd leave it on and let it do it's work and it can auto shut down upon completion.

Finding something portable and cheap hasn't happened.
For the way I like to play, 3 min is exactly no help in the whole archiving my fun moments.

You gotta understand how frustrating it is when Sakurai gives us a feature that he didn't need to include in the first place but chose to, and all he gets is **** from the fans he's trying to please. Both the Youtube and Tournament Mode backlash has me disappointed in the Smash community as a whole and it just pisses me off just how entitled everyone is on here.

Post launch support always involves new features.
He gave a feature to those who like those ultra quick matches... gave nothing to those who play for glory, nothing to do those play by Apex/Evo rules, or those who play stock with friends, etc. All that work went into it, but obvious features were omitted.
Beyond this... I feel this conversation started to degrade into flaming... so I will bow out of the rest of it.
