Pivot Grab sometimes causes Smash attack?

Hey everyone, I'm new here :). Really loving learning this game!

I have Y button on the pro controller set to grab, and when i try pivot grab, I sometimes get a pivot smash attack (if that's even a thing?).
I can do this on purpose sometimes, and it seems like it depends on the timing of the button press and opposite direction input.
I tried this on a couple different controllers and it happens quite consistently.

Is this normal? Please let me know your thoughts.
