Seems like a bad ruleset, but I thought I'd go ahead and post anyway for those who are interested:

Super Smash Bros Brawl Tournament Rules

General Rules
• Customers must use the controllers that are provided by the store. Stores will use the Wii controller w/ nunchuk to host the tournament.
• Tournament will be organized into a bracket-style format.
• Players will be paired off randomly for the opening round.
• The winner of each match will be determined by high score (number of KOs) and will move on to the next round.
• Play will continue until the last two players remaining compete.
• The player who wins in the final round wins the tournament.
• All players must be present and on time for their matches, if the player does not show up on time it will result in disqualification from the tournament.
• Abusive language, abuse of an official and/or abuse of equipment will result in immediate disqualification from the tournament.
• All decisions are final and will be made by the tournament officials.

Game Settings
• Insert game disk for Super Smash Bros Brawl for the Nintendo Wii.
• From the Main Menu, choose Game Modes, "Tournament."
• Under Tourney Rules, select your players per match (4 players).
• Next, enter in the total number of entrants participating in the tourney (up to 32 players). Verify that tournament seedings are “random.”
• Select your Tournament Rules:
Time Per Round: 2 minute
Handicap: Off
Damage Ratio: 1.0 (this is a default setting)
• Continue to “entrant settings” and create detailed data for each entrant.
• Select stage choice: to keep the tournament fair, select “SINGLE STAGE”. Continue on to the Stage Select Screen and choose “BATTLEFIELD.”
• Once all data has been entered and brackets have been set, select “Begin” when prompted to begin the tourney.
• This will start the Tournament. As each round ends, the game will prompt you to bring in the next set of players to begin the next Brawl.

Yeah, I was thinking about going to this but the rules are lame, and if Taki doesn't go I don't go...cool people aren't going either ways.

Wiimote and Nunchuck only and the only stage allowed is battlefield? 2 minute timed matches and not stock to boot. Gosh, that sounds like an awful rule set.
I would come if I wasn't moving back to college that day. (and if they actually allowed GC controllers)

What happened?

What would good rules be then? Gamecube Controllers and items? Pictochat stage and using the classic controller? Meh

People love crying about the rules, but I don't care either way. Well if items are off then everyone should have been happy.

If its gamestop then its probably always going to be the Wiimote and Nunchuck, but I guess they do that because brawl was released on the Nintendo Wii and not the gamecube, they figured use the controls that the system originally has.
