Picking up items: Aerials/dash attacks?

Is there any way to re-mod the item pickup system so that dash attacks and aerials can pick them up? Given that it's summertime, the only person who can play smash of any form with me always demands that items are turned on high, which doesn't work very well with project M since they also refuse to learn how to wavedash to pick up items...

If you're in the air you can also simply air dodge to grab items or if your character's hands are near them you can press Z to grab them.
