Question:

If melee was released with only the current top tier characters. S Tier / Top 8 characters. Would you consider it a well balanced game? Why or why not?

I actually think that if you had a game with only the top 8 characters, people would have more time playing each one and then proceed to find every single negative and positive aspects for each character, leading to another tier list for those characters, regardless of how good they are.

No tier list can be completely balanced unless every character is the same. However, they can develop a "rock-paper-scissors" approach to it. Character A beats B, B beats C, C beats A. That's not balance in the traditional sense, but with the right ruleset and a little friendship, anything is possible!

Really though, rock-paper-scissors is a different kind of balance, but it could provide a new look on the series.

Tbh the only glaring issue with Melee's balance is how badly low tiers get bopped by top tiers, namely Sheik. That said, Sheik herself is a really interesting and unique character when compared to the other top tiers, so it's a worthy tradeoff.

Instead of top and high tier, it would be split up, kind of like SSB64 (I heard the balance in that game isn't too terrible, but they still have all the tiers). It's just the way tier lists are made. Bottom tiers don't have to be that bad, they will just be the worst characters in the game, whether there is a large gap to get them there or not.

I wouldn't say spacies are ridiculously "in a tier of their own." Their MUs against Marth, Sheik, Puff, Peach are all even-ISH, with stages playing a large part in the swing. The most egregious MU in their favor is Fox-Puff.

They have no bad match ups arguably, and that's what sets them apart. Are they so insane that they break the game? Of course not. But are they measurably better than the rest of the case? Of course they are.

Eh... I wouldn't even really call it a balanced game even with the top 8. The top 8 includes the two people like Ice Climbers and Captain Falcon. However, Captain Falcon is indeed the worst of those characters. I am not sure about Ice Climbers. They seem extremely underused even for over a decade of play. With Jiggs, Marth, Sheik, Falco, Fox, and Peach pretty much all have even match-up or so with each other to some extent. Falco/Fox would still need a debuff in some sort imo lol

Although, such an idea is not really worth doing. If certain characters are bad, then people will simply not play them lol
