PED Suit Item?

I had this great idea. If we had the PED suit as an item, a character using it would feel Phazon coursing through his or her own body and become stronger, so their attacks become more devastating, but they turn red if not used, and must attack to vent out the Phazon before it explodes. Any thoughts about the PED Suit being an item?

The front-plate of the PED (the Federation-logo shaped thing that's seemingly slapped onto Samus's fellow hunters) would be an interesting item that is worn like a badge and works like you described.

While I abhor the concept of Hyper Mode with a passion, I have to admit this would be pretty awesome.

Perhaps adding to it, getting attacked by others also increases your likeliness to overload/turn red.
