Smash 3DS Patch for Super Smash 3DS already?

On the Japanese eShop, under the advertisement for Smash, the demo and a patch (Ver 1.0.1) are available... does anyone know what the patch is for? I was able to download it without the game yet...

Update: Reading it again, it's more of an expansion pack:

It triggers randomly during online play once added, and assigns points to certain characters, and prizes are received at fixed intervals to whoever is using said players...

But it is a mode for "online play" with "anyone", yes. : ) It is unclear whether it is automatically triggered or you have to select it specifically. But it sounds automated.

It can be downloaded, but it seems the mode itself is live from September 15th 3 PM (JST) onward.

Yeah I'm pretty sure the game has to 'go golden' a month before release, and the patch is probably what they do in between.

I gave it a re-read and updated my original post a little. Apologies for the confusion. I also found some other translators who agreed more in line with the updated one:

The patch adds a new mode to online play called Conquest mode, which occasionally will trigger during a game and adds additional weight to the result of said match. Winning will add points to a tally that certain characters, and at the end of a certain period those points will be tallied and players associated with the winning character receive a prize.

Basically, in online mode, Conquest sometimes triggers during a game. Each wins add points to a certain character, and at one point, players affiliated with the winning character will get some prizes. It's a bit like the Steam Summer Sale camp game.

Hmm sounds like the feature from Kid Icarus Uprising's online where a random player is sometimes given a random power/weapon after a match ends. Things is here the post from NeoGAF makes it sound like in 2v2s and 1v3s, everyone on the same team gets the bonus, unlike in KI:U.
