I just thought of a good idea. What if they had 3 or 4 past characters, like how they have past stages. Past characters would be exact copies of characters from previous Smash games. They'd have the same appearance, moves, ect. They wouldn't have final smashes or any of the new techniques like footstool jumping.

They could have 2 Melee characters and 2 SSB64 characters. They'd play and look exactly like they did in those games.

They could also use past versions of characters that don't make the new roster. I.e., if Ness gets cut for Lucas, N64 Ness could be a past character. Or let's say Brawl Zelda doesn't transform into Sheik, they could add Melee Zelda/Sheik as a past character.

Most people here probably won't appreciate the genious of this idea, but anyone who's familiar with the Street Fighter and Street Fighter Alpha games knows how awesome it is to be able to play as past versions of characters against newer versions.

Jag förstår inte. Vad sa du?
Well...they'd suck without Final Smashes and advanced techniques, but I think this is a pretty creative idea! Maybe they could be alt costumes (for the characters that do return)?

So implementing either overpowered or underpowered Melee versions or the rediculously overpowered SSB64 versions into Brawl? Sounds good to me! Characters that are underpowered or average will most likely either be buffed or end up the same way and so there'd be no benefits to playing an equally or even more so underpowered/average character from Melee without upgrades to the model/moveset and missing key additions like the final smash. The overpowered characters will get nerfed hopefully and so by implementing them you're just adding in the imbalance that Brawl will strive to get rid of. No thank you. This just sounds like an idea that the people that want Brawl to be "Melee version 2" would come up with, simply because it means their favourite overpowered character won't get cut or kicked in the balls (in terms of strength).

Take your example of Ness. SSB64 version = overpowered, Melee version = pretty gimped. Even without stuff like toadstool jumping and a final smash the 64 version would still be too good I reckon and the gimped Melee version would end up even further behind the competition due to missing those things. Then if you were to change the power of the moveset, any of it's mechanics or add those things in, you'd be changing the past characters and hence they're no longer the past characters and you may as well have added in a new character and save yourself the effort.

I don't understand your objection. Are you saying that past characters, such as N64 Ness, would be cheap? He wasn't cheap in the first SSB. Being good is not the same as being cheap. They do exactly what I said in almost all of the SF games, and the SF games are known for being some of the most balanced fighting games ever.

They weren't cheap in the first game because all of the characters were pretty rediculously good, especially when compared with Melee. Some of them got hit pretty hard, Kirby and Ness especially, in the transfer to Melee. It'd be fine if Smash Bros. = Street Fighter, but it doesn't and the fact of the matter is that 64 and Melee were quite different games and the balance isn't anywhere near perfect in Melee nor nothing like the same as the first game really in terms of character strength. I imagine that SF was pretty **** balanced to begin with and from there on in only tweaks were made to characters and so the "past" characters aren't too much different from the current versions. Try telling that to a Kirby fan.

Why do I have this gut feeling G&W is going to return? Probally the only retro who'd return, maybe with Sukapon. I expect a good nerf.
I have to say...I just played Joy Mech Fight and I don't see what the big deal is with Sukapon...

I like how people come to my topic and decide to talk about whatever they want, instead of what the thread topic is.

Play Game and Watch and see whats so great about him :\. He got in Melee.
Go check out the Sukapon thread. They have a moveset there, and might give you a good picture.
Hmm...I'm starting to think Sukapon would be a cool character...Wasn't until I found a good picture of him...It was in a style similar to my art style

Takamaru being most possible? Last time I checked, hes just a ninja/samurai and nothing else. Real Shiek/Marth like.
ehhmm... maybe that is true, but he was recommended 3 times on Sakurai's Poll, so at least he's the most recommended retro character

sorry freeman123 u_u
well, I think the idea is good, but if it was implemented, not many characters would be selected for it IMO. I think they would be Mario and Kirby
