though the first video was brief, this thread can serve as a discussion on how Pac handles other characters.

If he returns, Wario woud be a funny match-up. Can Pac actually chomp that bike of his (if Wario returns).

Speaking of Pac-Man against other fighters, I'm still really surprised that he doesn't have some sort of attack and his repertoire that allows them to eat things. I know at this point it's kind of redundant, because we have Kirby, Wario, and Dedede who can all do the same thing, but it's one of those things that I figured Pac-Man would have without question.

Technically the pellet trail is that move. lol

Pac-Man may have trouble with long range fighters. (Mega Man being the best example)
But i think he can do well in close range battle.
I beg to differ.

The fire-hydrant is a not only a physical barrier, but can push away fighters. Given that he has short stubby joints and a really massive hurtbox that is begging to be combo'd, I think Pac-Man wants to be anywhere but close-range for the majority of the cast. Especially since he, if he gets any stage presence, doesn't have to approach. It's bad enough that characters like Bowser have to lumber around. It's another thing when you not only have projectiles, but can summon a barrier, push him away. Did I mention projectiles? With some of the most wacky trajectories in the game? :b Yeeahhh, I think he should stand alllllll the way over there.

Should also mention that Mega-Man is actually not a long range fighter, but a mid-range fighter. A lot of his projectiles are some of the slowest in the game, and all his normals that fire projectiles disappear after travelling a relatively short distance. If not for the fact he had that Leaf-Shield, he would be completely destroyed by true ranged characters. I don't know how Pac will handle that.

Speculation of course.

ADVANTAGES:
  • Pac-Man will probably have an Advantage over characters like Mario, Link, Tink and Pikachu thanks to his Fire Hydrant and crazy projectile Patterns.
  • Pac-Man will probably take down characters like RosaLuma and Samus with relative ease if he's careful and skilled enough.
  • Mii's Brawler and Swordfighter should have a slight dis-advantage over Pac-Man
DIS-ADVANTAGES:
  • A skilled Bowser, Marth, Zamus or Little Mac will probably be able to destroy Pac-Man if he's not careful, because Pac-Man's apparent light-weight and giant hitbox are BEGGING to be combo'd.
  • Ness/Lucas will probably be able to deal with Pac-Man with some ease, as long as they're careful enough.
  • Villager seems to have an Upper-Hand against Pac-Man, with the Gyroids, Pocket and a Bigger defense line in the form of a Tree.
  • A Skilled Kirby will probably be able to take down Pac-Man with ease, since not only can Kirby's Hammer Flip still basically OHKO at +100%, but the fact that it's chargable now gives it even more power, probably killing at +85% if it's left charging up enough, plus Kirby has alot (and I mean ALOT) of Multi-Hitters that deal alot of Damage in a short time.
  • Palutena will probably be able to kill Pac-Man (and everyone else) REALLY EASILY. Seriously, she looks so OP.
  • Zelda looks like a slight problem for Pac-Man, and Sheik could be devastating.
ONE-OR-THE-OTHERS:
  • Mega Man and Pac-Man will be one-or-the-other, in my Opinion.
  • I honestly think that--ironic as it is--Pac-Man and Mr. Game and Watch will be basically a 50-50 if G&W doesn't change much at all from Brawl, but if Pac-Man is stronger then he looks, Pac-Man will have the upper-hand.
  • Pac-Man and Yoshi seem 50-50 IMO, but Yoshi looks to have a slightly bigger advantage with his recent Buff.
  • Mii Gunner looks like it'll be 50-50 with Pac-Man.
And that's all I can think of.

I don't think he's as bad close range as some of you think. His hurtbox is at least kirby length, and all of his smashes seem to have a lot of length to them. If anything, pacman may be able to destroy characters like little mac and bowser by keeping them at a set distance from him with properly spaced smashes and projectiles thrown in.

Good matchups

45:55
Little mac vs pacman

Little mac can wreck pacman if he gets in too close, but with good spacing and pac-man's seemingly invincible side B move, pacman could probably juggle little mac for days on end and make his day horrible. Not to mention the hydrant that can just push mac away from the stage while recovering.

Zelda vs Pacman

20:80

Pacman easily curbstomps her up close with his seemingly powerful down smash and far reaching, high knockback side-B. Zelda's light weight gets her KO'd easily after item spam by pacman. Has no approach to him due to his odd-moving projectiles, hydrant, and far reaching smashes and has no way to get pacman to come close due to her lack of viable projectiles.

Villager vs Pacman

25:75

Villager gets wrecked up close with literally no range in any of his jabs or tilts. Projectile wars should be fun however. The hydrant seems instantaneous while the tree takes some time to pop up what with the whole watering animation. The gyroid is canceled by fruit as seen in pacman' s trailer when the fruit stops megaman' s projectile. Pacman makes villager's life a living hell offstage with multi hitting galaga aliens and the pellet trailer which can instantly take out his balloons.

Bad matchups

Marth vs pacman

65:35

Pacman may have trouble in the air due to marth's high priority sword slashes, and pacman's smashes may get out-ranged (depends how short marth's sword became in this game) by marth's. Pac-man gets comboed easily but can rely on projectiles and the pellet trail to keep marth away from his hurtbox. Hydrant gimps marth at ledge If used at right time while marth recovers.

Zss vs pacman

30-70

Samus's speed and combo potential can allow her to easily crush pac on the ground. Faster in mid air than Pacman and she out outspaces him with her whip.

I don't follow. Mario can return all projectile with his cape (most likely) this includes the water from the fire hydrant and the hydrant itself. Projectiles clash against Link and Tlink's shields, so I don't see how that's a problem. They also have numerous projectiles themselves, each with a different pattern. Arrows arc downward if not charged, so a short hop and arrow will go right over a fire hydrant and hit Pac on the the other side if aimed well. Same for Bombs. The Boomerang can be angled over it and then down as well. Pikachu has no innate projectile defense but his Thunder Jolt can clash with low flying projectiles and would likely move along the Fire Hydrant as it is a surface. Plus, Pikachu has incredible mobility which should allow him to avoid projectiles more easily than other characters.

I just realized pacman can drop a hydrant by the ledge to force characters to jump on the stage from the ledge, allowing you to punish them with an up-tilt/up smash/ Uair. Works especially well against fast fallers like megaman, Donkey Kong, and bowser.

Yeah, it's gonna be a HUGE edge guarding move, and I love it.

So here's what I came up with when thinking about this, I feel like Pac-Man's match ups will be more or less the same as Mario's, the reason I think this way is because he seems to have similar tools, he's got a fast jab, jab flip kick standard combo, he's got a flip kick up air, a stationary mid-air kick, a multi hit down air, a standard B projectile which will probably be useful while short hopping, and a water pushing move that he can actually damage opponents with.

Not trying to say he's a clone, just that he has very similar tools from what I'm seeing.

He is pretty similar, which I love because Mario is actually one of my favorite, and best, characters. I feel he's different enough that he'll stand out as his own character, but he's similar enough that he'll be easy enough for everyone to grab and play. Sort of an all-around great character to use.

My only worry about this is that he'll just remain in standard tier and not really be of any use in the tourney scene.
