What do you consider cheap? A Hauppauge might be your best choice, but aim for an older model.

Update: I have kind of picked between the Avermedia Live Gamer Portable (first post) and the HD PVR 2 Gaming Edition by Hauppauge. I was wondering who else has used these devices, and which would be better for a noob like me.

On the Hauppauge you posted earlier, don't use that. It uses HDMI in settings, and most people for Project M I believe run them off their Wiis, even though I might switch to my Wii U just to piss people off, because I'm not half bad with my Wii Pro controller.

Oh and I forgot to mention, you don't necessarily have to buy the Hauppauge I suggested from eBay, they're on Amazon too, you just need to look, really.

Basically any online retailer will usually have it.

Well, I use the Wii U, so there's that.
Are you talking about the Classic controller pro, or the Wii U pro?

Can I ask why not your Wii? I use mine mostly for the sake of my Gamecube controller - I need to remember to get one of those see-through Japan only ones too...
And as far as I know the Wii U pro controller can't be used for Wii games, I'm fairly sure. Correct me if I'm wrong though.

OHOH I just remembered, when/if you get a Hauppauge, don't use the default recording software that should come on a CD with it, it's just terrible..

I gave my Wii to my sister, and I like the off-tv play that the Wii U has.
(oh, and there are some really good Wii U games).
Wii U pro controllers can not be used on Wii games.

It says it's $333.41
Too expensive, man!
Another reason to buy a Hauppauge, it might be a bit more complicated - but remember, it's significantly cheaper and it just has a big reputation of working well, almost all the YouTubers use it. And honestly, as long as you have a Computer handy, it's just more worth it. And feel free to go for the HDMI only version if you want to go full HD (Sorta) recording. I honestly assumed you used your Wii, because you have the simple pleasure of being able to use the Gamecube controller.

For the most versatile thing that also does 1080p at 60fps it is well worth it.
I don't see why upgrading from 1080i to 1080p is worth more than a 200$ difference. They both run at 60 FPS (Frames per second).

Granted even if I don't give a **** for Gran Turismo -- in the least.

It just looks better. Having a progressive signal go through interlacing and then making it progressive again is a mess. Not to mention I can capture at many more resolutions with many different connectors.

Everyone who I've personally known who has used one of the Hauppauge devices has put me off from ever trying one. Audio sync issues seem to be way too common with them and too much of a hassle to bother with. (This is actually common among USB 2.0 devices in general, and it's one reason I recommend staying away from them for the most part unless you just have no other options for your setup.)

The best answer to this question depends mostly on your setup and your needs. Do you plan to stream from a desktop or a laptop? Do you have compatible USB 3.0 ports or only USB 2.0? Are standalone DVR functions important to you or is greater compatibility with streaming software more important? Are you fine with just HDMI and component or do you need support for legacy connections?

I wrote a review of the XCAPTURE-1 and also included a brief comparison with other capture cards I've tried at the bottom. It's a great choice *IF* you need support for modern systems, retro systems, and multiple connection types (HDMI, VGA, component, s-video, etc). If you don't need all of that then it's probably not worth the cost. I also have a generally positive opinion of Blackmagic and Avermedia products. They've had their quirks but they do the job well once you set them up right. I've never tried Elgato but I've heard better things about them than Hauppauge. But if you want to start somewhere, figure out what's compatible with your specific PC first and go from there. There are a lot of decent options.
