Everyone who I've personally known who has used one of the Hauppauge devices has put me off from ever trying one. Audio sync issues seem to be way too common with them and too much of a hassle to bother with. (This is actually common among USB 2.0 devices in general, and it's one reason I recommend staying away from them for the most part unless you just have no other options for your setup.)
The best answer to this question depends mostly on your setup and your needs. Do you plan to stream from a desktop or a laptop? Do you have compatible USB 3.0 ports or only USB 2.0? Are standalone DVR functions important to you or is greater compatibility with streaming software more important? Are you fine with just HDMI and component or do you need support for legacy connections?
I wrote a review of the XCAPTURE-1 and also included a brief comparison with other capture cards I've tried at the bottom. It's a great choice *IF* you need support for modern systems, retro systems, and multiple connection types (HDMI, VGA, component, s-video, etc). If you don't need all of that then it's probably not worth the cost. I also have a generally positive opinion of Blackmagic and Avermedia products. They've had their quirks but they do the job well once you set them up right. I've never tried Elgato but I've heard better things about them than Hauppauge. But if you want to start somewhere, figure out what's compatible with your specific PC first and go from there. There are a lot of decent options.
