Is netplay a legit way to get better at the game? I often feel like it causes me to play worse when I go to a tournament again. Is my mindset wrong?

Netplay has the issue that input is delayed, this means that if you don't practice on a tv your tech at tournaments feels off since they use tvs. Another problem with netplay is that things that aren't safe but are hard to react to are unpunishable due to the delay which means you can develop bad habits.

Netplay does however offer human players which is something you have to play against a lot to get better.

You can get better from netplay just be careful to not neglect the tv and don't build bad habits.

I know of 1 player who got pretty good by playing net play. He doesn't have a lot of transportation options so he can't go to many tournaments. But when he does go, he often places among the top few spots for both Melee and Project M in southern western Virginia (It's a pretty bad sub-region, but still). The improvement from net play might work best if your character isn't technical since lag will hinder technical proficiency

Netplay probably has 2-5 frames of lag. Using fullscreen with the Wii U adapter gives the least laggy experience possible and playing somebody nearby it feels really close to console. There is no substitute to playing offline, so just make sure you get some practice in on the crt before tournaments. Netplay is extremely beneficial if there's nobody good to play offline locally.

I just moved to a new city and the smash scene is further for me than it was at my old place. So I've started playing netplay a lot more. I don't like it because it feels too much like a competition of who can adapt to the feel of netplay better. Or at least that's the experience that I have

That simply isn't true, I appreciate the effort, but don't go around spreading misinformation.
Hbox stated that dolphin is like playing on a crt because of 0 input lag.

On netplay you will have fps lag which is completely different

What are you talking about.. Hbox thinks there is very low input lag, but not online, just over dolphin. A low buffer is comparable to crt.

You only get fps lag if you have a crappy computer, an unstable connection, or you don't know how to adjust the buffer.

It does, if you have a lagless monitor (most gaming monitors have about 9ms of lag which is about half a frame) and the wii u adapter. However, this thread is about NETPLAY, there is definitely input delay over Netplay.

You claimed there will be fps drops instead which isn't true unless you're under the cases I listed above.

The ideal way to play netplay is with a monitor with a high refresh rate and a good response time. Due to dolphin superb abilities, your inputs are being registered and demonstrated with extremely impressive precision. At this point you should find yourself a group of local netplay users (I myself am in a Southern Ontarian netplay group chalk full of helpful fellow Falcons) who are active and looking for sparring partners. This provides a low ping (therefore a low buffer) to all of your matches. You're working to create a highly technical, constructive online gaming experience. It really is the best way to get practice on the reg.

I think netplay is great, and people exaggerate its effect on your overall level of play. Definitely wouldn't hurt to get some CRT time before your actual sets if you're going to a tourney after lots of netplay time, but it beats the hell out of practicing on CPUs.

He said there is very low input lag. You only have FPS lag with a complete **** computer, sorry my friend, but you're wrong. If you can't back your **** up, don't spread your misinformation.

Low framerate is due to a **** computer. Lag is due to network (ping). Get ur facts straight first so you don't spread your misinformation

Last time I used Netplay on other games, It would sometimes de-sync, and kinda lag. Idk if it's different for smash.

That's literally what I just said lol, FPS Lag is **** computer like I said above. Lag is network problems. There's always going to be lag on netplay.

He said it felt like 0 input lag. Either way, people make mistakes, just cause he's a god doesn't mean he's perfect, we know the facts, he apparently doesn't, or flubbed when saying that. Either way, point remains, don't spread misinformation without looking into it.

Look, I understand that his info might not be 100% correct, but he did not say it "feels like". He literally said 0 input lag. No " close to" or "almost" or "feels like"

Lmao hbox is not the most relevant source of information. My friend was at his house and said he plays through the obs screen preview while he's streaming because he doesn't have to monitors! That definitely makes game play suffer. The fact of the matter is you can be lagless offline but there will be some amount of input lag online (frames of input lag = buffer/2). Fps lag is only from ping spiking, incorrect buffer, or incapable hardware.

To me, it seemed as if he was implying that it feels like 0 input lag. Either way, he was wrong.

Just an update from me, I have tried Netplay for the first time with a friend (2 hour drive distance) and it is pretty damn awesome. Of course there's a little lag, but I honestly can say I'm hardly effected by it. Can you get better using netplay (with a good internet connection)? I cannot stress how much I am saying YES. Even with this "little lag" I can waveshine across the stage, L-cancel, react to techs (with Rest), tech the ledge, you name it (or maybe it helps that one can already do this...).

Try not to forget that tech skill isn't everything in the game. You also need to play well. Are you making the right options in your play? Do you have the right mindset and goals each match? You can practice these things online and it helps a lot when you can also talk to your opponent, which is another plus to netplay.

Why have I waited this long to get into this?

As a Sheik, I love netplay. If you play a match or two, you can quickly get used to the slight buffer. If you use Anther's ladder and choose people close to you, and have a Wii U adapter/Mayflash, use netplay. It can only help you.

But still, Locals >>>>> Netplay

I agree with some of that. It actually can screw up your timings for L Cancelling and stuff. It makes it harder to do it when you are playing on a crt, but yes Locals are so much more helpful than Netplay.
