I've been playing a lot of smash 4 lately, mostly with Captain falcon. He's currently by far my best character, but one of my main smash buddies said :"you know, if you really wanted to get good, like competitively, you'd play a more powerfull character". I was thinking about it, and I decided he was right. Since I'm convinced the three best characters are probably yoshi, bowser, and roselina, I decided to get an amiibo of one of them to train with, since amiibos are really really good, and I bet I could learn a lot from having a decent training dummy. My choice of good characters was wittled down to one, when i realized that yoshi is the only amiibo of those three currently available in north america. I'm going to a smash tournament this thursday in Massachusetts. So I guess my question is this: If I really wanted to get as good as humanly possible at the game, would switching mains from captain falcon to yoshi be a better investment of my time than just sticking with captain falcon, or should I keep playing c fal?

You should stick with characters you like to play as. Plus Captain Falcon is pretty good too. If you like to play as him then play as him. :p

Or you could stick with Capt. and be the guy who proves that Captain Falcon is top tier material.

Captain Falcon is hardly bad in 4, plus switching mains 2 days before a tournament sounds like a bad idea in the first place no matter what reasons you have.

Falcon is looking fairly promising in this game. You gotta show them your moves.

amiibos/ai in general are only ever good because of frame perfect reaction time (something you will never have)
their strategies are generally terrible

Captain Falcon is a solid pick. I feel like there's very few bad characters in this one. If nothing else, I think Sm4sh might have the widest roster of competitively viable fighters of any smash game. Stick with the captain and show them your moves.

You don't have to drop him, but maybe consider someone with like, a reflector or something as well. You're going to run into some matchups Captain struggles against and it's beneficial to have a pocket character for that.

Smash 4 has a lot of counterpick relevance so maybe learn another character for matchups that your Falcon struggles with. Otherwise Falcon is still great in this game. Mr. R got to Grand Finals at that $500 online tournament the other day. Keep practising him. Show them your moves.

Well, it's no fun winning with the best characters if you don't enjoy them as much as you do others. Besides, Captain Falcon is a really solid character, you might not win big tournaments with him but he should be able to get a decent standing regardless.

But if you really just want to win and don't care about anything else, then yes, switching to Yoshi or Diddy is a better investment of your time.

You're not going to progress as well if you're not enjoying yourself. Pick who you like first. As you get better, it will be easier to pick up other characters later.

Yea man don't give up on Falcon. Like JC Ralls said. Just maybe use another character for counter picks. When I play Falcon if my opponent uses Diddy or Zero Suit I personally swap to sheik. Now Yoshi is a great choice of a character but I think you should stick with what you played most and then change later if you have about a week or two before a tourney.

1. Bowser is definitely not top 3. You'd probably lose more with Bowser than Falcon.

2. Stick with the characters you actually like. I hate the mindset of using characters you don't care about much just because you want to win. It kills the fun of the game in my eyes. We already have enough generic top tier mains. It's much more rewarding and interesting seeing and winning with characters not as overdone. Sure, pick up a decent character for bad matchups against your main but don't ditch him altogether.

If you're in a bad spot, then train. Also when you take a break, read about captain falcon and smash 4. Just remember the 3 important points in playing smash competitively

1: Play to learn

2: Have fun when you play.

3: SHOW THEM YOUR MOVES!

With the fact that they're willing to patch this game, I think you have to ask yourself a couple of questions. First, if you do switch to Yoshi, would you feel as comfortable playing the character if he got nerfed to the point that he's as good as Falcon is now, assuming he is indeed currently better? If not, would you be willing to make another switch to another top tier character?

This is a big one. While we don't know how long they will support this game, you're better off focusing on characters you enjoy or else you'll just keep starting from stage 1 a bunch of times.

Stick with characters you like to play with. Captain Falcon looks really good in this game imo.

I say to stay with Falcon. I main him as well, along with villager, and he is by far the most fun character to play in this game.

Oh, and also, your friend is wrong. Falcon is really good.
