Smash Master
so ive always been a huge fan of the zelda series. ive played every game except skyward sword and spirit tracks and ill be playing skyward sword later this summer and spirit tracks when i get a better computer to run a ds emulator. one game that i never played but never thought was much of a different game in the series was Ocarina of Time Master Quest. my roommate happens to have a gamecube and the OoT/master quest disc. so feeling nostalgic, i decided i wanted to play OoT but i figured since ive beaten it literally a million times ill go for the "harder" master quest version which has claimed to change it up and make things more difficult. so i played and beat it over this past weekend and in my opinion this game was an absolute disgrace to the original OoT for N64.
the only increased difficulty in this game was finding the gold skulltulas and the deku tree. the rest was oversimplified and the dungeon complexity was thrown out the window. each dungeon is basically handing out the map, compass, and item right from the beginning. then half the keys are removed and their rooms now hold the gold skulltulas instead, which makes half the dungeon optional. they add in a couple tougher monsters and have them do a little more damage, but the number of monsters is significantly reduced. you can basically walk around without having to kill anything except when the one small key is needed. most dungeon puzzles have been replaced with casting dins fire to light torches, no more fighting monsters, placing bombs everywhere to find the secret alcove or looking for a hodden switch. the well in kakariko village had no trapped doors and no need for the lens of truth; pathetic. the water temple requires you only fight two lizalfos, dark link, and the boss, oh and the water level only needs to be changed 3 times; *****-water temple. half the fire temple is literally ignored, no falling doors, secret walls to bomb, and the fire maze is optional (only required for gold skulltulas and it can be skipped with the song of time). every dungeon i felt incomplete, like finishing an exam an hour early, since all the necessary items are acquired immediately without much hassle. unless youre a completist, master quest is a watered down version of the original that just tries to move you along so you can focus on getting all the gold skulltulas and heart pieces at the end. i hated this game, simply because it took all the things i loved from the original and threw them away while i expected it to take everything i enjoyed and improve upon it. i was really hoping they were gonna mind-**** everyone by adding in more keys and rooms and enemies into the water temple, instead; they removed all but one key, all the enemies, and made half the rooms optional. i loved the water temple and they basically made it a longshot pitstop and kept the unforgettable dark link for tourists. i thought the well and shadow temple were some of the creepiest and unsettling dungeons ive ever played simply because you couldnt use the lens of truth constantly or your magic would run out (without using glitches) so you never knew if you were gonna fall through the floor or if an invisible monster was gonna attack you, now theyre just gay.
this was truly a 30 hour waste of my life, i wish i had played the original instead. im posting not only because i want to vent but im hoping there are other people that had the same opinion as me, or if there are people that disagree then please tell me what about this game was more satisfying than the original (graphics dont count cuz its a 5 year difference).
