Hi guys, how's it going?
I was thinking about how great it would be to finally be able to play Smash competitively when Brawl comes out because no one I know plays. I was wondering if there were any plans, particularly around SmashBoards here, on how tournaments could be held online? Let's face it, Nintendo isn't going to make it easy for a bunch of people to enter a tournament (FRIEND CODES ).

I guess we could all just enter friend codes for each other, but how will the other competitors know who won each match without being able to watch each match?

yes, like its been said you can record each match and that would be that.

or

maybe spectator mode will work with friends and if there is an official tourny on smashboards there could be moderators that would watch the matches, making sure who wins is credited for it. Maybe they could even record it themselves if they so wish. Of course since there would be more then one moderator (or whoever it may be) there could be more then 1 match at a time.

Spectator mode actualy sounds kinda fun now...

Hopefully Sakurai will include the tournament mode within the Online Friends Matches. That way it would be set up automatically, and you would just have everyone join in at the beginning and have the winners advance to the end. Unfortunately no one would be able to see the matches though. Only the players themselves, but you cant have everything.

there's a possibility you might be able to enter online tournaments with random players, or with your friends with Brawl's online capabilities. One thing for sure is that if you can't watch a friend's match, and since there is no communication, if ther eis not tournament function online, there is no way anyone is going to run tournaments based on the honor system.

As for videotaping the footage.... thats so impractical.. are you really going to send it to the tournament host after every match until your win is confirmed?

And what is to stop someone from jsut filming themselves beating someone else and claiming it was you?

There's also the question of how latency be dealt with between players--how will it be shown in the game? Will it be masked? Or will you have to compensate for it?

Farther away than "close by" geographically and there would be lag/latency either noticed by the player from the opponent or vice-versa. Then there's also dropping the fps to compensate. That last point doesn't seem the best, though. Actually dropping the fps seems horrible.

can't wait to experience it, either way

Hmm. I think that if spectator mode would work with Friends matches it would be best. That way we can have judges spectate and record the winners.

Still though, I wish I wouldn't have to enter the friend code of every single person in the tourny...

Apparently, many people missed that part where Halo 2 held its biggest tournaments at physical locations whereas online tournaments were just fun side events. Brawl will have "fun tournaments" online every so often, but the best players will once again travel to compete. I am looking forward to smashfests with online play but not tournaments.

I'll be semi-"dead" for a while after Fe
Online tournements...for fun?

for sure

Yeah I know the real important ones will be live. (Like MMs or any other major prize tourneys.) And that kinda sucks for me cause I would wanna win some stuff. :chuckle: I wouldn't be bothered to deal with shipping and handling for anything that's won though. Blah!

I'll still enter online tourneys and live ones (which like never happens) cause it's fun. They'll probably be just as serious but more tensiony and less personal. Like playing a genius computer at chess that's programmed to be creative along with not lose instead of playing an old guy that yells when he gets checked.

I hope to see lots of you online. And I hope I can make it to a full MLG or something...ANYTHING in the years to come. Instead of stopping by, kicking *** in the only to rounds I can play then leaving to go back home after a trip to a tourist attraction. :urg:

What ev'

If I'm not mistaken, this is there first major endeavor into online gaming.
That really depends on how you define 'major'. Tons of DS titles were online (Metroid Prime Hunters, Mario Kart DS, etc.) and Mario Strikers Charged for the Wii was also online.

What about all their DS games?

I remember being really excited about online potential for Animal Crossing only to be bitterly disappointed by Nintendo's miserable execution.

Well, I'm working on a project with any forum friends willing to help.... check out my signature for the link to the thread. It's for FUN... you will meet plenty of people... play plenty of matches and it's a tournament series not another forum/join website so it works together with sites such as smashboards.... people should really check the TOURNAMENT DISCUSSION thread more often.

Like I said...

Brawl is the first major online game.

DS titles hardly count, and super mario strikers isn't really one of my favorite franchises...

Animal Crossing online was limited... But what did you expect? Animal Crossing was never designed to be a multiplayer game really. Mario Kart DS online was really fun.

But yeah... this is Nintendo's proving grounds.

They have a chance to do something epic here, and they will not let us down.

And of course there won't be like serious tournaments online for money. They will be for fun. If you are that serious, you have to play in person, so there is no lag. That is true with every game (Halo, Counter Strike, Unreal Tournament, etc.). Come to think of it there aren't that many online fighting games...

I am going to hold an online tourney the weekend after brawl comes out, if you wanna help me mod that that would be fun, i was thinking about this, and i was thinking in game filming might be the right way to do this, or a screenshot of the winning screen, or the honer code, if they cant come to an agreement who won, then both are out of the tourney. If you think about it its probably not fro any reward, except a title and fame, maybe a sig, so why would anyone have the intent to cheat?

good thing is if you did, you would have all those people on your list, so if you were bored, you could jump online and sumone you know would likely be online! Plus you would probabally only have to enter the name of the people you face in the brackets, (again depending on the tourney type...)

I just want you to think about what you are proposing with in game filming.

A) Everyone has the ability to do it
B) assuming A is true... for just a 16 person tournament.... you need to watch 8 videos for the first match.... 4 videos for the second round of matches... 2 videos for the 3rd round and then the final video.

Simply kicking both people out of the tournament is not the way to go beacuse obviously if one person is lieing... there's no way the other person is just going to let them get away with it.... a screen shot is a much quicker and better bet than a video... but you're still requiring then to view this for a lot of different matches...

Another solution is in game tournament directors... that suicide themselves then watch the match... this adds possible lag... but with honest directors its a better bet.

What you really should ask yourself is.... how can I best take advantage of the fact that this is ONLINE PLAY. What can I do to account for people lieing and how can I best have A LOT OF PEOPLE get done with their matches and not have to take forever to do it.....

i totally disagree. if you ask me, animal crossing has no purpose if not for multiplayer.

and i also found mario kart online to be very dull because there's no way to chat. i might as well be playing a CPU opponent except there was tons of lag so green turtle shells were meaningless.

Grab your computer and just play while chatting through AIM or SKYPE or something... there's a reason that smashboards as you put all that in your profile....

you bring up a good point, i too was thinking about the in game judge to watch the match. And the video thing, you under estimate the amount of time im willing to put into anything to do with brawl. But yes screen shot would probabally be the most likely thing, other then the possible spectator mode. Of course to decide the best way to do this we will have to see what options the game offers online in the final product, this is purley speculation.

Also aim and webcams will be a cool thing to have going while in matches with people you meet around here. i think it will be nice to make friends on here and become their friends on brawl, and when you log on brawl if you have exchanged a lot of friend codes there will always be a friend ready to brawl, For most of you that will be me, i can guarentee i will be online more hours a day then offline for the first few months.

That's great and all that you're dedicated to Brawl... but when you say time to put in... do you mean organizing and preparing for the tournament... or do you mean time to sort all the results and check to make sure everyone was honest about your matches.

If you're willing to put in the time to check everyone's results... let me remind you that in the meantime... everyone is waiting for your further review to be instructed as to who they are playing next.

Believe me.... this is going to take a lot of effort if you want it done right............

I would like to state in response to people saying SSBB is Nintendo's first major online game and that it will be their proving ground need to re-play Metroid Prime Hunters...

SSBB's online is a major step backwards from MPH's. MPH had the ability to add 'rivals' which were opponents that you met in random matches. This allowed you to play them again at another point in time, it even allowed them you join in your game lobby (which SSBB's is limited to just friends). MPH even has voice chat, even though it is confined to the game lobby.

MPH was Nintendos first 'real' attempt at online and if current game trends on Nintendo's consoles point to anything, it will be the high point of their online for this gerneration.

:ohwell:

Anyway on topic, if spectator mode is availible to friends then i still say that would be the best solution for online tournys, even if they are 'just for fun'.

Mind you N still hasn't released all the details about the online, a lobby still has a possibility.

I hope so, it makes sense.

Voice chat I believe won't be in it, how will you speak? Sync a BlueTooth headset with the Wii or something? =/

But I definately believe that the rivals feature will be back from MP:H, and without the shadow freezing :p

I doupt the rivals system will be included in Brawl at all. In MPH we were allowed to see the other players name, in Brawl we are 'protected' from seeing other players names at all in random battles. http://www.smashbros.com/en_us/gamemode/wi-fi/wi-fi01.html

With Nintendo denying us the ability to even see a random players short name I doupt we will be able to 'rival' them. Its pretty cut and dry, though quite odd since we can see other players names in all other online Ninty games, Wii ones included. :urg:

Realize that even if we don't get an option to do this, it would be no different then joining / creating the game with the proper rules... inviting both contestants and then having them wait a couple seconds while you kill yourself or even let them go at it as you take out all your lives.... thus allowing you to observe the match as an observer and no longer part of that action.
