Online matches are decent for match-up learning?

I hope this is ok to post here.
Let me first say IM NOT trying to make a matchup thread or anything.

I would just like to know what you guys think about online matches being a decent way to decide an arguement between characters and who's better?
I ran into this one guy, who acts like he knows what hes talking about, and says that online matches arent an arguement.........well NEWS FLASH, not everyone can afford to even go to local tourneys especially depending on where you live, your age, and if you can even get there(I live in Wisconsin) I say that's asking for a lot just to decide an argument between which characters are better then others and how to decide their match ups

What do you guys think? Are online matches a decent way to know explain your reasoning if you can? I know that lag may be a problem, but thats not always gonna happen and frankly, idk if that should be the only reason to not even bother trying.

Check out Anther's smashladder.com for matchmaking online. It's miles ahead of For Glory in the way that you can talk with your opponent's and lag is NEVER the deciding factor in a set. Those who rank high definitely did not do so through playing in lag. Playing online means you can play people outside your local/regional scene, which means you get an exposure of the variety of characters/playstyles.

Case in point, Yoshi is a relatively rare character seen due to his awkward attributes and movement. I've used the site to give players exposure to the matchup, which in their area they may not have a prominent yoshi main to play.

It is comparable to offline play granted you and your opponents have decent connection, and is a great tool to learn matchups with.

As long as you run into good players in FG or even meet them here on Smashboards I don't think it matters where they come from.
That being said I find it's much better to meet people here or on Anther's ladder because talking with your opponent makes a huge difference in what you learn.
