Summary
The main mascot for Nintendo. Mario is depicted as a short, pudgy, Italian plumber who lives in the Mushroom Kingdom, where he is regarded as a hero; he is best known for constantly thwarting the plans of the evil King Bowser to kidnap Princess Peach and subjugate the Mushroom Kingdom. He is well known for his plucky personality, enthusiasm and spirit in the face of enemies, unexpected physical agility, cooperation with his brother, Luigi, and his close relationship with Princess Peach whom he has repeatedly saved. -Wikipedia

A very good recovery with many options
Good projectile

Great edgeguard potential

Not many approach options
Harder to combo compared to other characters

Spike is slightly hard to hit
Mario Playstyles
Combo Mario - This type mostly goes for the Dair > Uair combo which can be a zero - death ending with an Up Smash.
Aggressive Mario - Mario has great grabs and has great edge guard potential. Why not abuse it? This playstyle is one that will easily kill you at low %'s.

Forward Throw: 12%
III. Matchups
Ness: A very good matchup on Mario's side. Ness has the perfect weight for some uair combos at an earlier %. Once Ness is around 50% or so, you can get him off the stage and block his PK thunder with fireballs. You could also just keep edgeguarding with your great downsmash and/or aerials.
IV. Mario specific combos, techniques, and tactics
Double Aerials: Mario is able to do 2 aerials in a single shorthop if the aerials starts with dair, uair or fair. It can then be ended with a uair or nair.
Tornado Spike: Using Mario's Down B (The Tornado) can be used as a spike if the opponent is trapped within mario's boots at the end of the Tornado.
