... is there any off-brand stuff that is actually good? I go on brand if I can, and I can afford it, but if there was a nice off-brand controller I would snatch it up. I see a few on eBay but they obviously are not Nintendo made and I get wary.

Pelican comes to mind. It's bigger than an official Gamecube controller and has some dead-zones or it just feels a little "off" and sluggish. Then again, it's been years since I used the official controller. So, it's good, but not spectacular.

They also make wireless ones.

Quick question: Why don't people mention the Wii U Pro controller for SSB4?

There are 3rd party controllers that look exactly like the real thing, minus the logo above the start button. They fill every pawn shop and used video game store in my city. They must be avoided.

Just like there are nun chuck users, there will be pro controller users, but they won't be able to switch back to Melee/Pm/brawl as easily. Also, wireless controllers are frowned up (not angrily mind you) in tourny venues.

Nintendo are bringing them back out with smash 4 on wii u, buy those if you support the return of them, since it's been a decade overdue at this point.

Yes we all know the gc's are back. You do make a good point though that if we smashers want Nintendo to keep making them that we'll have to support their decision to bring them back to North America in the first place.

But yeah, TC, if you're patient you can just wait for the re-release of the good stuff.

I only need one controller. And they will be getting $20 from me just to allow me to plug in the controllers I bought ages ago that still work. So really, if they aren't going to offer the controllers at a competitive price, I'd be willing to buy off-brand. Nintendo does produce quality work though.

I could spend 45 Euros on ONE pro-controller, or I could buy the adapter for 20 and use all the gamecube controllers I already have... Easy choice. :-P

Same as above. The Pro Controllers are nice but they're a bit steep. I'd rather use my wavebird.

I almost picked up one of these yesterday. But I quickly googled and was told how bad an idea it was.

The Wavebird was the only offbrand (and wasn't that one still endorsed by Nintendo?) non-wired controller that I felt had any quality to it, and I still didn't like it because convenience and flexibility is offset by input delay and signal interference.

Cause it's uncomfy as all get out like the 360 controller and we don't like it. ¦(

Well, I don't. I won't speak for anyone else. ¦D

Any design in which the primary directional input (per system being played on) is not horizontally aligned with the major button group is uncomfortable. The shape only adds to it (at least the Xbox controller had the button alignment right). Thus, no matter how much people may praise dualshock controllers, they're still probably my least favorite design ever.

Nah, Dualshock and the Wii's Classic Controller Pro are easily the most comfortable and logically sound controllers in my eyes. They're more convenient for playing multiple types of games for me and I like their sticks, buttons and D-Pads best above all else.

The Gamecube Controller comes in second place and anything else isn't worth my time.

I agree they're flexible (that's the only reason I even use a dualshock), but it's still uncomfortable having misaligned sticks. Unless I'm playing a shooter (better on PC anyway) or other dual-stick game, I almost always just use whichever control type is aligned with the buttons.

Gamecube controller is the best though. Having the three buttons in a line (B A X) is excellent and makes certain games far easier (while admittedly sucking for poorly configured or noncustomizable ports of old games, like the Megaman collections).

Here, have both. Apparently, square and O are backwards-mapped to B and X respectively for some reason, but you can change that in Smash.

Considering how I have the Classic Controller Pro custom mapped, I don't think I'd need to change it at all.

The real question is: What are X and Triangle mapped to?

I assume A and Y respectively, but I'm not sure. The review I read only mentioned Square/B and Circle/X.

If that's the case, then it'd already be the same as my custom controls are. D:

I might need to invest in this thing...But I'll have to get a PS2 controller first. I don't have one. Only PS3. XD *traded his PS2s in years ago*

This is shocking. As much as I love the Gamecube controller and am not really an Xbox fan that much, I feel like the best controller ever is undoubtedly the 360's. It's comfortable, got the right weight to it and everything is easily accessible without forgetting which button is which (I still do this with the Wii U and 3DS face buttons. Don't even get me started on SNES).

I despise the 360 controller. It's literally the 3rd worst controller I've ever had the displeasure of using.

1st and 2nd going to both original Xbox controller designs.

Guess which systems I don't like playing much!? =D

Edit: HOLD UP!

Back to Gamecube Controller talk. We're going off-topic.

I do feel like the Gamecube Controller could be improved if it used the thumbsticks from the 360 controller, if nothing else.
But tbh that would probably be the only change I'd make to it aside from a second Z button maybe.

I'm thinking my best bet is to learn to play with the pro controller and be done with it. Who knows how long the availability of the gc contollers will last? If there's one thing smash -knows- is how to wreck them.

If I had to change the gamecube controller I would like the Wii nunchuk analog stick and another z button.

If I were to make just one change to the GC controller for Smash, it'd be to make the L and R buttons only a small press to click, like triggers on the Wii U Pro etc. It's just a preference of mine really, I HATE having to hold the buttons down to the point where they're just about to click and I also hate pressing them all the way in when you have to exert like 4x the energy used for other controllers to do so (It isn't that much, again just a preference thing). A 2nd Z for me would only really serve for like, mashing purposes. I can sort of imagine other reasons too, but that's the main one I think is really worth anything.
