thus far I've been planning to get a 3ds xl for smash, but I've recently learned that you can get a refurbished wii u from nintendo for the exact same price. This would mean I could play Wind Waker, Zelda U, Hyrule Warriors, and more plus Smash Brothers with much better graphics.

but the one thing is that the only TV i have is pretty small and most modern games become widescreen when i try to play it, so i'd want to play pretty much only on the gamepad itself. does anybody know if smash supports this? because if so I would change my purchase in an instant.

There are very few Wii U games that don't allow you to do this, unless they need the Wii U pad for things like Nintendoland they will most likely allow you to do so.

Off TV play is just the freaking bomb on the Wii U. I honestly use it more often than on screen since I'll be watching something on Netflix on my monitor and playing a game on the gamepad at the same time.

And yet Nintendo almost never makes this capability known to the consumers who would appreciate it most, middle class moms.
No more complaining and fighting over who gets the tv! C'est parfait

Either way, I'm fairly certain that there'll be off-tv play for Smash. Not sure if it'll work for local multiplayer though? Many of the games don't allow that I think

Of course, Smash would honestly be the best game for this. Even choosing tv and gamepad for brawl, it plays fine on that so yeah.

alright thanks guys!
Off tv play is dope but idk if people wanna risk their gamepad's health playing smash on it.
i feel like the gamepad is much more built for smash than a fragile 3ds xl is. the gamepad is thick and sturdy with real analog sticks.

The only nintendo games where you can't play off-tv are the ones where you need a second screen to play the game, and sakurai said that he isn't going to give the gamepad special features (at least for multiplayer gameplay) so yea, you can play smash off-tv (I'm 99,9% sure of it :p)

Mario Kart allows it. Everyone can just huddle around the GamePad.
