I don't know if this is already a thread, but I've yet to see it.

Anyways, what are some of the more obscure games or game series that you played or still play?

For me, these are a few that I love.

This series was and still is my favorite rpg to date. Maybe it's personal bias from growing up, but I loved this much more than Final Fantasy and it even rivaled pokemon for me.

From the PS2 days, I absolutely loved AC 2 and 3. I messed around on 1 a little, and 4 was really fun, but 3 has and will always have my heart in this series.

And finally...

I'm not exactly sure how obscure of a title this was. I think it actually did pick up some traction, but nobody I've ever talked to (except one person) even knows what it is. Either way, this was one of my favorite games from the Genesis. Very unique twist on the concept of side-scrollers.

Anyways, those are some of mine. What are yours?

I dont see many people talking about PSO a lot but i remember growing up and just playing the hell of that game, the gamecube version is literally one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had and I have been thinking about going back to it actually. It sucks Sega **** all over it with PSO2, but BB, PSO DC, and GC were awesome...don't think they 're too well known, at least to younger folks (bb, dc, and gc and all of the other versions were essentially the same game, just different platforms...but still)

I played just a little bit of Phantasy Star on the Genesis, but I remember it being pretty fun. Never played any of the Onlines. They always looked fun, though.

Armored Core was pretty well-known, but like most mech games, it only really appealed to a certain niche.

Tons of people have fond memories of PSO. You're right, though - younger generations probably don't know much about it, since Phantasy Star hasn't really been relevant for over a decade.

It's not necessarily some super obscure series, but STALKER gets overlooked far too often. I'd say the meme it spawned was more popular than the games themselves. Anyway, they're probably some of the best first-person shooters ever made. The atmosphere is so good, and they've genuinely freaked me out in ways very few horror games ever have.

I played this game for a long time on a Sonic collection for the PS2. I never got past the second level, though; Comix Zone is really hard.

Anyways, I'd like to give Neverwinter Nights a shout-out for being an amazing but forgotten series. 1 was better than 2 and 3 was cancelled, but that series had a super-deep plotline, fairly balanced gameplay, fun multiplayer (you can do the entire story co-op, or download a user-created campaign), and has some of the best level-design software I've ever seen. The graphics were pretty good at the time but don't hold up (what else could you expect from early 3D,) but 1 still feels about as fun as it was a decade and a half ago. 2 wasn't as good in my opinion (it was super buggy and didn't give as immersive of an experience, although its graphics are much better and the UI wasn't as intuitive as 1's,) but it was still really fun.

Custom Robo's really fun. As the name implies, you build robos from a variety of parts and fight other robos. There's actually a lot of depth to the customization and batting too, though very counterpick heavy. As a result the tag mode where each player controls two robos and switches mid battle is the most fun.

Freedom Planet isn't one I hear people talk about much. It looks like a Sonic knockoff at first, with the furry critters running fast around loops and all, but they play very differently mostly because FP has really developed combat on par with something like Megaman and Shovel Knight. Music, gameplay, and graphics are all perfect imo, though the story's a little iffy. You can turn off the cutscenes completely anyway so no biggie.

I wonder if anyone here remembers the Blaster Master series..... It had some fantastic entries, most notably the PSX game. Overdrive was fun too, though it lacked some of the charm the original had. After Overdrive (about 6 years ago) the series faded away again. I'm not even sure if Sunsoft is around anymore, which would be a shame because it was a lot of fun rolling around in a hi-tech combat vehicle jumping and blasting stuff. And going out on foot was like one of the series' defining aspects with its top-view gameplay style.

Blastermaster was unusually hard in the best way possible. It was fun!

Back in my early gaming days I could never beat the game, though I did make it all the way to the end. It wasn't until the Wii VC release that I finally made it all the way through.

The PSX game offers a bit more of a challenge than the original, especially in Hard Mode.

PSO for the GameCube was probably one of the best online gaming experiences i've ever had still to this day. It is still possible to play it online, which is pretty awesome too...I haven't played online recently, but it was a lot of fun when I did. It's a game I can still put hours into without getting bored.

I've actually played each and every one of these extensively. AC was a series I always wanted to like but I could never wrap my head around the controls as a kid.

Oh man, this game. Kingmaker was the best module to ever come out for it. It's a real shame that this and so many older DnD games are starting to slip into obscurity.

I feel like this is a problem with a vast majority of Sega franchises. In addition to Phantasy Star, there's series like Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, Ecco and Shinobi that haven't been relevant in fifteen years or more. When it comes to Sega franchises, they're either this or a case like Virtua Fighter or Yakuza where they're not popular outside of Japan. For newer generations this is probably why Sega is just LOL SANIC TEH HEGHOOG.

Hell, I'm still surprised at how much support and hype Shenmue III got.

Well aside from Touhou, which is still fairly visible on the internet at least, I've always been a big fan of Dark Cloud and Ape Escape. I'm still pretty sad they never made a Dark Cloud 3, and that the last installment of the Ape Escape series was a very disappointing title, and that it hasn't had a true sequel in over 10 years, and probably never will.

I actually remember playing Shrek 2 years ago! At least I'm not the only one that remembers playing that game.

Does God Hand count as obscure? I mean, it's a cult classic.

Cult classics are in a tricky territory when it comes to obscure games. Like, everyone knows about them, so they're not really unknown. But at the same time, a vast majority of people that talk abut them have never actually played the goddamn game.

Which is a shame because God Hand is one of the best beat 'em ups ever made. That game is so good. I've been replaying it, and to quote Gene, "I LOVE IT!"
