KaptKRool
Smash Apprentice
At first, seeing Marth and Captain Falcon were refreshing and put me in a good mood. I wanted Marth to return, as he was one of my better guys from Melee. Falcon, everybody saw that coming, and Ness, I didn't much care for. I had told myself that as long as King K Rool and/or Ridley is in, I wouldn't mind having Ness and would accept him merrily (the more the merrier). Then I saw Falco, and thought the same thing, because I knew he'd be a clone too. But silly me, I thought Ness and Falco would at least have unique Final Smashes.
Then I learned of Ridley as a boss, which was very disappointing, as he was my second most wanted character. Then the next character I saw was ROB, which just ruined my good mood at the time, because I knew that confirmed the 35 character roster. That's when I realized my most wanted character wouldn't be in, K Rool, along with a couple others I was looking forward to.
Assuming the final character is either Wolf or Krystal, as long as theyre not a clone, I don't mind.
But overall, I'm really disappointed. WW Link was one of the top 5 I wanted in the game, along with K Rool, Ridley, Lucario, and Geno. Technically though, I wanted a WW Link with an exclusive, de-cloned moveset, so that kind of rules him out. So overall, 1 of my 5 really wanted characters made it in, Lucario. WW Link is cool, but it's just a new art style slapped onto a Link clone. And on top of that, Falco and Ness are so cloned, the Brawl team didn't even bother giving them unique final smashes, which just clears up any chance that I might want to play as them.
The worst part about it is that Sakurai and others kept trying to build up hype, telling us the character roster was unimaginably and unbelievably huge. So I was expecting 40-50, which seemed reasonable to me, 23 starters, and extra 17-27 unlockable characters, that's what I'd define as unbelievably huge. So because I bought into the hype, I was disappointed, and I don't expect to ever get over it, honestly. I'm still highly looking forward to getting the game as soon as it launches and playing it constantly for months, but I'm not going to forget the roster that it could have been.
But on the plus side, I'm looking forward to Lucario (but missing mewtwo), Wario, King Dedede, Diddy Kong, Snake, Pokemon Trainer, and the Ice Climbers with their awesome FS. And on an odd note, I was expecting and looking forward to Ganondorf getting his own moves, though I wanted his aerials to all be the same so I could somewhat pick back up with my main from Melee, and now, it looks like he's still a C.Falcon clone, which means I should be able to easily pick back up with Ganondorf and make him my main, if I don't go with a newcomer. So there still are a few people I'm really excited to play as, but I'm still left feeling disappointed and feeling like there could have been a lot more.
Everything else about the game seems amazing. The my music, the stages, the stage creator, online, the masterpieces, the Final Smashes, Assist trophies, everything else seems like it will come together to make a great game. Unfortunately, to me, I think the greatest drawback and disappointment will be the character roster. Melee doubled the N64 versions roster, and I was expecting Brawl to at least make it to 40 (pity I believed the whole 48 character roster thing that came by about a week ago).
I'll still love the game and play it relentlessly, but the character roster hurts it. With all the hype and expectations Sakurai, Nintendo, and all the preview sources have been building up, I have to say, the character roster doesn't come close to delivering what I expected.
But what does everyone else think? Who are you glad made it, and who do you really wish would have? And how do you feel overall about the roster?
